Alfrid Lickspittle was a man of Lake-town and a deputy to the Master of Lake-town.
History[]
Alfrid was born during the Third Age and eventually became Deputy to the Master of Lake-town in Esgaroth. He watched his master's back, lurking around town, watching out for troublemakers or talk of rebellion.
Dwarves[]
During the year TA 2941, Bard arrived at the main gate with a barge full of barrels of fish. Alfrid interrupted Percy who was about to let Bard through without questioning anything. He drew attention to the fact that Bard's job was to collect empty barrels sent from the Woodland Realm and that the barrels were in fact not empty. Unbeknownst to Alfrid, the barrels were hiding 13 Dwarves and a Hobbit that Bard was smuggling inside Lake-town. Alfrid ordered his men to empty the barrels into the lake and as they started to do that, Bard asked Alfrid what he thought the people would do when they heard the Master was dumping fish back into the lake and whether it would be his problem when the riots and uprising starts. Alfrid ordered his men to stop and leave the barrels alone. He told Bard to watch out because he knew where the bargeman lived and Bard told the man that it was a small town and that everyone knew where everyone lived.[1]
Later, Alfrid met with the Master in his halls and talked to him about the talks of troublemakers and the talks of a possible election. The Master told Alfrid he wouldn't stand for an election and Alfrid told him that he didn't think they would ask him to stand. They decided that Bard was a problem because he was loved by the people and did things his own way.[1]
Alfrid was present when the Dwarves were captured at the armory and brought before the Master. When Thorin gave his word that all would share in the treasure of the Lonely Mountain, Alfrid asked him why they should believe him and Bilbo Baggins spoke up, vouching for the Dwarf.[1]
The Master agreed to support the Dwarves' quest and Alfrid was present the following morning during the ceremony when the Dwarves and Bilbo left for the mountain.[1] Four of the Dwarves came to Alfrid and the Master, one of them gravely wounded, asking for medicine. Alfrid shoed the Dwarves off, saying that the Master had more important things to attend to.[2]
The Dragon[]
Alfrid and the Master plotted to capture Bard and finally decided it was time to imprison him. They sent out Braga with the guards to apprehend him but the man managed to evade them. Bard ran into an alley where Alfrid and the Master were waiting for him. Alfrid stuck out his foot and tripped Bard before the Master used a log to knock him out.[1]
When the men of the lake realised that Smaug was coming, the Master and Alfrid began loading the royal barge with treasure and gold as much as they could carry in order to escape the fire. Smaug arrived and began breathing fire across the whole town and the Master's barge made it's way through the chaos. Alfrid told the Master they were carrying too much weight and the Master agreed but decided to push Alfrid off the side in order to save more of the treasure. Smaug destroyed most of the town before getting shot by Bard and his Black Arrow. The body landed on and crushed the Master, Alfrid surviving due to getting pushed off earlier.[3]
After Smaug's attack[]
Alfrid survived the burning lake and began rolling around screaming in the shallow water near the shore as other people rushed around trying to find their loved ones and shelter. He got up and tried to take a blanket from Hilda Bianca who refused to listen to him. Bard stopped Alfrid from fighting Hilda and Bain tripped him. When Percy yelled out that he had seen Bard kill the Dragon, everyone began to cheer. Alfrid stood up and grabbed Bard's hand, lifting it into the air and yelling "King Bard! All hail King Bard". Bard whipped his hand away from Alfrid and asked where the Master was, nobody knowing his fate. Everyone began to get angry at Alfrid for helping the Master in his corrupt schemes and greed and began pulling at him, attacking as a mob. Bard yelled at them and told them they had seen enough death for that day and that they should focus on finding shelter. Bard made the decision to take the survivors up to Dale and Alfrid mused that going to the Lonely Mountain would be a great idea, mentioning the gold. Bard warned Alfrid that the gold inside that mountain was cursed and that they would only take what was promised to them. Bard handed a pile of firewood to Alfrid and after they were done talking, Alfrid offloaded it to an elderly woman who was already carrying a stack of wood, telling her to pull her weight.[3]
Upon reaching Dale, Alfrid noticed lights coming from Erebor and called to Bard. They realised that Thorin and his group must have survived the night. Bard told Alfrid not to worry as there was gold enough in that mountain for everyone. Bard told Alfrid to take the night watch, much to the man's dismay. He didn't stay awake and slept up against a wall.[3]
In the morning Bard asked Alfrid how the night watch went and Alfrid told him that it was all clear and that nothing gets past him. Bard walked through the doorway to see the Army of Mirkwood standing there. Later when Gandalf the Grey arrived, Alfrid walked out and assumed that he was a tramp and a vagabond, telling him to leave. Gandalf asked who was in charge and Bard appeared behind him, asking him who he was. That night before the Elves and Men planned to march on Erebor, Gandalf told Alfrid to watch Bilbo Baggins and if he should try to leave to let the wizard know.[3]
Battle of Five Armies and death[]
The morning came around and Alfrid went to check on the Hobbit, noticing to his dismay that Bilbo had indeed left. Alfrid was in Dale for the Battle of Five Armies when Azog's orc soldiers swarmed into Dale. He tried to hide as he did not wish to fight and when he heard Bard talking about sending the women, children and elderly to the town hall, he seized the opportunity and stepped out, telling Bain to give his father more respect. Bard reminded Alfrid to lead them to the Town Hall and then to return, every man fighting. Bard handed Alfrid Bain's sword but as Bard left, Alfrid handed the sword straight back to Bain and ran towards the Town Hall, knocking elderly people down in his franticness to get to safety.[3]
Alfrid put on women's clothing and hid his face, hiding in the Town Hall. When Hilda and the other women decided to fight with the men, they tried to recruit the womanly figure of Alfrid and realised his true identity. Hilda berated Alfrid for being a coward. Alfrid saw a pile of coins and decided to take them and run, stuffing them into his dress. He ran and was almost killed by an Ogre before Bard shot the creature from behind him. Bard told him to get up in a strong tone and Alfrid refused to come under his authority, deciding to leave. Bard called after Alfrid to tell him that his slip was showing.[3]
Alfrid hid inside a catapult of a dead troll and watched as Gandalf struggled to fight a large troll. He watched in dismay as a single coin fell and landed on the lever, activating the catapult. He was flung straight into the troll's mouth head first and was killed along with the troll, which accidentally saved Gandalf.[4]
