The Arkenstone , or the Heart of the Mountain, was a large white jewel and the family heirloom of the Line of Durin following it's discovery while mining in the depths of Erebor. It was lost during the Sack of Erebor when Smaug came in and took over the Lonely Mountain and it's hordes of treasure. Thorin Oakenshield embarked on a quest to return to the mountain in TA 2941 to find the Arkenstone in order to unite the Dwarf clans and retake the mountain. The Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, successfully stole the Arkenstone from Smaug but hid it from Thorin. It was later buried with Thorin after his death during the Battle of the Five Armies and was no longer the symbol of kingship amongst the Dwarves of Erebor during the rest of the Third and Fourth ages.
