The Army of Dol Guldur, also known as Azog's army was a huge force of Moria Orcs, Trolls, Goblins and Wargs that was bred under the command of the Necromancer in Dol Guldur. The Necromancer who was actually the Dark Lord Sauron, wished to have control of the Lonely Mountain and kingdom of Erebor and sent the army under the command of Azog to seize it. Dol Guldur didn't have much power following Sauron's retreat to Mordor and the destruction of the army during the Battle of Five Armies but it rose again during the War of the Ring. The forces of Dol Guldur were finally defeated by the combined forces of the woodland Elves and the Dwarves of Erebor.
History[]
The spirit of Sauron returned after his defeat during the War of the Last Alliance and took refuge in the fortress of Dol Guldur. Long abandoned, the fortress served as a good location for him to regrow his strength in the darkness. With Thranduil only concerned what happened within the borders of the Woodland Realm, Sauron became known as the Necromancer and began to raise the dead. As his power grew, Orcs and spiders came to his aid, the greatest of these being Azog the Defiler. Sauron began breeding Moria Orcs, Trolls and Wargs within the cess pits of Dol Guldur with the intent of taking the Lonely Mountain and then from there taking Angmar.
During the Quest for Erebor in the Third Age, Radagast the Brown discovered the Great Spiders and followed them back to their source, discovering the Necromancer in Dol Guldur. This caused Gandalf to investigate the fortress and after lifting the spell of concealment, he was able to see the legions of Guldur Orcs bred and ready to attack Erebor. After Gandalf was captured by Sauron, Azog led the army out of Dol Guldur and they marched towards the Lonely Mountain.
The army marched through the day and night, the Guldur Orcs being tough enough to endure the sun. Following the death of Smaug, Bolg Spawn of Azog approached the army on their way and updated Azog on his hunt for Thorin Oakenshield. Azog brought the army to a halt as he gave Bolg new orders to go to Gundabad and gather a second army for war. Azog then led the Orcs into the hill and through the tunnels made by the werewyrms of Middle-earth.
The Dwarves, Elves and Men were all already in conflict in front of Erebor over the gold and treasures within the mountain and Azog took them off-guard, attacking with his forces and making his command post up on Ravenhill. The army was split into three sections - the main attack force that assaulted the Dwarves in the valley, the Dale force which surged into the ruins of the city and attacked the men and elves and the Ravenhill force which was mostly elite guards and lieutenants for Azog and his command force. By the time Bolg's force arrived, around three quarters of the force was destroyed after a long costly battle. Azog himself was killed by Thorin Oakenshield, stabbed through the chest with Orcrist. The force was completely destroyed in the last part of the battle.
The army of Dol Guldur was active again many years later during the War of the Ring, once again wreaking havoc on Mirkwood and it's surrounding regions.
