The Army of the Dead, also known as the Dead Men of Dunharrow or Oathbreakers, were Men of the White Mountains, cursed to remain in Middle-earth by Isildur after they abandoned their oath to aid him in the War of the Last Alliance. They haunted the caverns beneath the Dwimorberg, and the valley of Harrowdale that lay in its shadow. They were led by the King of the Dead, whose name had long been forgotten. Since the line of Isildur was thought to have ended, no one could call upon the army to aid them in their hours of need, as they would only answer to an Heir of Isildur. Aragorn arrived via the Paths of the Dead in the Third Age and called upon their aid, using a reforged Andúril to prove his lineage. He led the army into battle at the Pelennor Fields, mowing down the army of Minas Morgul outside Minas Tirith. Afterwards, Aragorn kept his word and saw their oath fulfilled, allowing them to finally fade away and rest.
History[]
Early history[]
During the Second Age, they were known as the Men of the White Mountains. When Gil-galad and Elendil sent for the various tribes of men to fight with them against Sauron during the War of the Last Alliance, they promised to fight but never showed up. This caused Isildur, son of Elendil, to curse them, that they should never rest until their oath was fulfilled.[1]
