The 'Assassination' of Sauron took place at the dawn of the Second Age. Following the defeat of Morgoth during the War of Wrath, Sauron arrived at Forodwaith to rally the Orcs gathered there to his cause. Adar, the 'father' of the Orcs led a coup against the Dark Lord, stabbing him until he was thought dead. Sauron survived the ordeal, transforming into a grey, gooey form.
