After Bilbo Baggins entered Erebor and awoke the fire-drake Smaug, Thorin Oakenshield and his company were trapped inside the kingdom. With no way out without facing probable death, Thorin decided to put together a plan using their knowledge of the Dwarf mining forges to attempt to slay the dragon. After a long skirmish, the Dwarves managed to cover Smaug in molten gold, taking him by surprise. However, Smaug broke out of the gold before it set and went flying towards Lake-town to reign terror.
