Balrogs were huge demon-like creatures cloaked in shadows and flames of ancient times, that wreaked fiery havoc across Middle-earth, serving Morgoth, and those that endured hid at the deep roots of mountain ranges.
History[]
The Balrogs lived beneath the mountains through tunnels delved by gnawing nameless things, undisturbed save perhaps by the stirrings of evil and by the mining of Dwarves or Goblins who dared venture unawarely into their lairs.
The last known remaining Balrog was known as Durin's Bane and was awakened by the ceaseless delving of the greedy Dwarves in Moria, upon whom the demon unleashed his fury and drove them out of their ancestral home city, before he encountered Gandalf and battled him atop Zirakzigil where he was felled.
