The Balrog of Khazad-Dûm was a Balrog of Morgoth that abided in the depths of the mines of Moria. He was awoken during the Second Age by the mining efforts of Durin III.

The Balrog first appeared in the first season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Durin's III's death was supposed to be included in The Eye but the special effects were hard to get right and the show-runners decided to keep Durin III around for another season and leave the Balrog fight for the end of Season 2.[1]
