Barliman Butterbur was a Man of Bree and the owner of the Prancing Pony which he inherited from his father.

History[]

Early Life[]

Barliman was born, assumedly in the town of Bree during the Third Age. He inherited the Prancing Pony inn from his father sometime after TA 2940.[1]

War of the Ring[]

In the year TA 3018, Barliman Butterbur was serving guests at the Prancing Pony when four Hobbits; Frodo Baggins, Samwise Gamgee, Peregrin Took and Meriadoc Brandybuck arrived, wishing to stay at the inn. Butterbur offered them some Hobbit-sized rooms available at the inn. Frodo identified himself as "underhill" and asked the man to tell Gandalf that they had arrived. Butterbur recalled the identity of Gandalf, having not seen him in six months and telling as much to the Hobbits. Butterbur continued to serve people drinks as the Hobbits sat down. Frodo pulled him aside, asking the identity of the shady man sitting in the corner. Butterbur told him he was one of the rangers and that he was known around Bree as "strider".[2]

Later that night, the Nazgûl attacked Bree, looking for the One Ring. They rode up to the Prancing Pony and entered in, swords drawn. Butterbur, aware of their arrival, hid in fear and pure terror as they passed.[2]
