The battle took place when the Fellowship of the Ring were traveling through Moria and were attacked by Goblins and then the Balrog, Durin's Bane.
Prelude[]
The Fellowship decided to enter Moria after trying to cross the Misty Mountains at the Pass of Caradhras but failing due to Saruman's intervention. They discovered that Moria was the site of a Dwarf massacre but were trapped inside by the Watcher in the Water, forcing them to continue on. Gandalf led them through the tunnels and eventually they reached the Chamber of Marzarbul where they were attacked by Orcs and a Cave Troll. They survived that battle and began to hastily make their way for the Bridge of Khazad-dûm to escape the mines.
The Battle[]
They hurried through the ancient city and were surrounded by hundreds of Goblins who crawled down from all around them. Before they could attack, they heard the sound of the Balrog approaching and grew scared, running away. Gandalf realised that the Balrog was coming and continued to lead them on.
They reached a gap in the broken narrow stairway and were forced to jump over. They all jumped until Aragorn and Frodo were the only ones left. Goblins were shooting arrows from way above and Legolas began taking them out with his own bow. Frodo and Aragorn's platform began to crumble and they leaned forward, running onto the safe section as the stairs they had been on fell deep into the mines.
The Balrog caught up to them at the bridge and Gandalf stood in the middle, standing off against the demon. The Balrog tried to use his flaming sword and Gandalf blocked it with a blast of white energy. The Balrog brought out his fiery whip and tried to take out Gandalf but the bridge collapsed beneath the beast. The Barlog used his whip to knock Gandalf off the edge. Gandalf told the Fellowship to flee and then let go, falling after the Balrog.
Aragorn led the devastated Fellowship of the Ring out of Moria while Gandalf was believed to be dead. In reality Gandalf faced of against the Balrog in the depths of Khazad-dûm.
