Beorn was a Skin-changer and the last of his kind. He had a dislike for Dwarves but hated Orcs. He lived in a cottage near the edge of Mirkwood and he had the ability to change into the form of a large bear.
History[]
Early life[]
Beorn was one of many skin-changers who lived in the Misty Mountains but they were all hunted down and killed by Azog the Defiler and his Orcs. Beorn was the sole survivor of the species.[1]
Chasing the Dwarves[]
The company of Thorin Oakenshield decided to stay in his house to get away from Azog and Beorn himself who was in bear form. They made it inside just in time and Azog dared not approach, knowing of Beorn's dangerous nature.[1]
The company, starting with Gandalf and Bilbo, (Who are not dwarves), approached Beorn (in man-form), in the morning, as he was chopping wood with an axe outside the house. He was displeased as Gandalf called the Dwarves out one by one to introduce them.[2]

Battle of Five Armies[]
Beorn arrived at the Battle of Five Armies, riding an Eagle alongside Radagast. He jumps off and turns into a bear before attacking the front lines of Gundabad War Orcs.[3]
Thorin's funeral[]
Following the battle, Beorn attended the funeral of Thorin Oakenshield and Oakenshield's nephews Fíli and Kíli. He stood beside Gandalf and looked on as the other Dwarves said farewell to their former King.[4]
Family[]
Beorn would go on to have a son - Grimbeorn, who was alive during the War of the Ring.[5]
Behind the Scenes[]
There was concept art done, including Beorn as a captive of Sauron during the Dol Guldur scenes of The Desolation of Smaug or The Battle of the Five Armies, an idea that was clearly ultimately scrapped.[6] While not explicitly canon, there isn't anything contradicting the idea as it isn't clear where Beorn is located between his appearances in both films.
