Black Arrows were designed for taking out large beasts such as Smaug the Dragon. They were created to be fired by the Dwarvish wind lance and were used by Lord of Dale Girion when Smaug laid waste to Dale. One arrow remained and was kept by Girion's descendant Bard when Smaug attacked Lake-town years later. Bard used the arrow to shoot and kill Smaug.
