Bolg was a large Orc chieftain and son of Azog the Defiler. He commanded the Gundabad army during the Battle of the Five Armies. He was killed by Legolas during the battle on Ravenhill.

History[]

Early life[]

Bolg was the spawn of Azog the Defiler and became a key leader of the Orcs of Gundabad during the Third Age. Bolg fought many battles over the years, causing the likes of Gandalf the Grey and Legolas Greenleaf to know of him and fear him.[1] Bolg was summoned to Dol Guldur by the Necromancer at an unknown time with his father and bands of Hunter Orcs.[2]

Hunt for Thorin Oakenshield[]

Azog left the fortress to hunt for Thorin Oakenshield and left Bolg in charge of the war preparations. When the company of Thorin reached Beorn's House, Bolg arrived on his Warg with a message for his father. Bolg returned to Dol Guldur with Azog, who was told by the Necromancer that he was needed to lead the armies of the the fortress. Azog put Bolg in charge of the hunt for Thorin and remained in the fortress to prepare.[2]

Bolg led the Orcs to Mirkwood where he inspected the gates to identify an unguarded one. When the Dwarves and Bilbo escaped in barrels, Bolg and his pack attacked the Elves. Bolg ordered the Dwarves killed. He shot Kili in the leg with a "Mordor Shaft", with his Morgul Bow, in an attempt to stop the Dwarves from opening the river gate. Kili managed to open it anyway and the Dwarves escaped after a long river chase sequence. Bolg's Lieutenant, Narzug, was captured by Legolas and Tauriel and later killed.[2]

Bolg tracked the company to Lake-town, to find that most of them had already departed for the mountain. Bolg sent off Warg riders to take the news to Azog, before heading into the heart of the town. He was met by Legolas who met him in battle. During the fight, Legolas lost Orcrist and before he could pull out his knives he was thrown at the walls by the massive orc. By the time the elf drew his knives out, Bolg was gone. Legolas found that Bolg was the first orc to make him bleed. The Elven Prince pursued Bolg out of Lake-town on a horse, while the Orc took off on his warg.[2]

When Azog's army arrived near within a days march of Erebor. Bolg arrived to meet him, having evaded Legolas. Azog was displeased that Bolg failed to kill the Elves but sent him off to Mount Gundabad to gather a second army of Orcs. Bolg rode to Gundabad, commanding the legions to come forth and departed for Erebor to reinforce the Dol Guldur army that had already engaged the allied forces there.[3]

Battle of Five Armies and death[]

Bolg later led the Gundabad Orc Berserkers and Orcs soldiers into battle on Ravenhill, knocking out Bilbo with his mace as he arrived. He caught Tauriel by surprise and attacked her. Kili jumped on him from behind but in a short fight he was beaten by the giant Orc and fatally stabbed. Bolg moved on to finish Tauriel from behind but she managed to push him over the edge of the cliff, falling off herself. Bolg arose and began to walk towards the she-Elf but was stopped by Legolas who had knocked over a tower to create a bridge so he could reach the Orc in time. The two rivals fought again, along the unstable rocky bridges. While Bolg was knocked down for a short time, Legolas threw Orcrist to Thorin to help the Dwarf in his fight nearby. Bolg quickly charged at Legolas again, the Elf having to resort to his knives. Legolas wasn't going to make the same mistake as he did in Lake-town, and managed to dominate the fight. He swung around on top of Bolg and stabbed him through the head as the platform collapsed. Legolas leapt to safety and Bolg's body fell, crushed by the rocks that fell with him.[3]
