The Book of Mazarbul was a book started by Balin's colony after their return to the mines of Moria during the Third Age. It recounted the events of their return to the kingdom as well as their last moments as they were swarmed by Goblins. The Dwarf, Ori, was killed while still holding the book in the Chamber of Mazarbul. The Fellowship of the Ring discovered the book near Balin's tomb while traveling through the mines during the War of the Ring, Gandalf the Grey reading it's pages and therefore coming to the conclusion that Balin and his colony had been slaughtered.
