King Durin VI and his kin awoke the Balrog hiding beneath Moria which killed Durin. The Balrog from that day on became known as Durin's Bane. The Dwarves were eventually forced to leave Moria.
Prelude[]
A Balrog of Morgoth came to rest in the depths of Khazad-dûm sometime following the wars of the First Age.[1] Durin VI was the King of Moria for a portion of the Third Age.[1] He oversaw the mining of mithril deep within the caverns of Khazad-dûm.[2]
The conflict[]
During a mining expedition in TA 1980, Durin awoke the Balrog sleeping in the depths. The Balrog killed Durin VI as well as his son Náin.[1]
Aftermath[]
Following this incident, the Balrog would infamously be known as "Durin's Bane". It continued to abide in Moria right up until the War of the Ring, when the Fellowship of the Ring travelled through the mines.[3] It engaged Gandalf the Grey in battle and was eventually killed by the wizard.[4]
