Denethor II was a Man and the ruling Steward of Gondor toward the end of the Third Age and the War of the Ring. He had two sons: Boromir and Faramir. He became disillusioned and despaired, believing there was little that could be done to stop the powers of Sauron. He sent Boromir to Rivendell when he heard that the One Ring had been found. His task for Boromir was to get the ring to Gondor so they could use it. News would finally reach Denethor of Boromir's death as part of the Fellowship of the Ring. This news sent him into a pit of despair. During the Siege of Gondor, Denethor had a pyre prepared for himself and his remaining son Faramir to burn on. Gandalf and Pippin intervened, saving Faramir. Denethor was pushed into the flames during the commotion and was set alight. He ran and fell to his death from the highest point of Minas Tirith.
