The Dol Guldur Orcs, also known as Azog's Orc Soldiers or Guldur Orcs, were bred from Moria Orcs that inhabited the fortress of Dol Guldur. They were unleashed in the Battle of Five Armies, where they fought against the allied armies of Elves, Men and Dwarves.
History[]
As evil stirred once more, orcs from the caves and pits of Moria gathered around the Necromancer. Within the confines of the abandoned fortress of Dol Guldur, their numbers multiplied as more were bred in the cess pits.[1]
After Gandalf the Grey was captured, the Necromancer's army led by Azog marched towards the Lonely Mountain to claim Erebor for their vile master.[1] In the ensuing Battle of the Five Armies, the Dol Guldur Orcs were completely wiped out.[2]
Trivia[]
- The Dol Guldur Orcs are referred to as Moria Orcs during the film, confirming that they come from Moria originally.[2]
Behind the Scenes[]
During production, the designers at WETA referred to the Orcs as Azog's Orc Soldiers. Deisnger and sculptor Jamie Beswarick took note of the section of The Hobbit that mentions the Bodyguard of Bolg amongst the forces of evil and took that into consideration when designing. Beswarick also worked on concepts for Beorn and Peter Jackson took a liking to one of his designs and it was repurposed to look like a giant Gundabad Orc. A lot of these ideas were scrapped once a more reformed armored look was given for the army of Orcs following Azog, the brief for the designers being to find a combination between the militaristic Uruk-hai of Saruman and the barbaric Mordor Orcs of The Lord of the Rings Film Trilogy. One idea was to have the skulls of the Orc's victims on spikes attached to their armor like trophies.[3]
