The Dwarvish wind lance was a turret of dwarvish make with the capabilities of firing Black Arrows, deadly to dragons.
History[]
It was set up on a tower in Dale when Smaug the fire-drake rained down fire upon the city. Girion, Lord of Dale, used multiple Black Arrows but only managed to chip off a scale of the beast's near-impenetrable side.[1] At some point the wind lance would be recovered from the ruins of Dale and moved to the top of a tower in Esgaroth. Many years later, Bard, descendant of Girion, would plan to use the last remaining Black Arrow against Smaug when the dragon attacked Lake-town but the bowman was imprisoned by the Master of Lake-town before he could reach the wind lance.[1] When Smaug attacked, the dragon quickly identified the danger the tower represented and destroyed it. Bard did end up killing Smaug from a bell tower with a make-shift wind-lance using his broken longbow and his son Bain.[2]
Behind the Scenes[]
In the design process, the large size of the wind lance was dictated by the large design of the Black Arrow. The decision was made because the designers felt that a normal sized arrow taking down a creature as large as Smaug would be unbelievable.[3]
