Ents, known by some as Tree-herders or shepherds of trees were a an older race of beings in Middle-earth that took the form of a tree-like being, often standing numerous meters tall. During the Third Age, there was a large group of them living in Fangorn forest. Led by Treebeard, they attacked Isengard and trapped Saruman during the War of the Ring.

History[]

Ents came into Middle-earth at an unknown time when forests were numerous in the lands.

Third Age[]

By the time of the Third Age, forests shrunk down and Ents became fewer in number, a myth to many of the peoples of Middle-earth. They did indeed exist in small numbers, a group of which grazed in the forest of Fangorn. They were often mistaken for trees, spending most of their time in a slumber.[1]

The Ents of Fangorn were called upon by Treebeard for a meeting to discuss whether to go to war against Saruman the White, who was abiding in Isengard right next to the forest. After a long discussion they decided to do nothing but after Treebeard witnessed the burning of trees on the outskirts of the forest near Isengard, he changed his mind and led the Ents into battle against the forces of Saruman with the help of the Hobbits, Peregrin Took and Meriadoc Brandybuck.[2]

Skills and Abilities[]

Ents during the Third Age appeared slow and drowsy due to their long periods of sleep. However they were not to be underestimated by any foe. If a threat arose that threatened an Ent's flock, they could unleash a stone-splitting, ground shaking fury in defense.[1]
