The Dwarves specially trained as archers amongst the guards and soldiers.

These Dwarves attempted to shoot down Smaug when he attacked but they failed at this task as they were only using normal arrows. A similar attempt took place in Dale with Girion and his archers. Balin led these Dwarf archers and was the only one to survive the attack since Thorin saves him.
