Gil-galad was the last High King of the Ñoldorin Elves. He is chiefly remembered amongst the Noldor for leading the Elves in the War of the Last Alliance.
History[]
Gil-galad became High King of the Elves after the hidden city of the Elves, Gondolin, was destroyed by an army of Balrogs, Dragons, Orcs and Trolls and King Turgon was killed. Gil-galad would settle down and start a kingdom in Lindon, where he would rule over the Elves from for many years.[1] As the High King of the Elves, Gil-galad was gifted with Vilya, the ring of air, mightiest of the Elven rings.[2]
When Sauron forged the One Ring in Orodruin, Gil-galad perceived Sauron in the shadow realm and removed his ring to avoid the Dark Lord's influence.[1]
Gil-galad and Elendil of Gondor formed an alliance to attack Mordor and eliminate the threat of Sauron. For two years, Gil-galad prepared and gathered his forces before meeting Elendil and Isildur with the forces of men at the watchtower of Amon-Sûl. From there they went to Rivendell where they spent yet another three years forging weaponry and armor. Finally the time came and the last alliance marched under Gil-galad and Elendil's command across the Misty Mountains and toward Mordor.[1]
War of the Last Alliance[]
Gil-galad and Elendil were met by a 500,000 strong force of Mordor Orcs sent out by Sauron which kickstarted the war.[1] Gil-galad fought against the Orcs himself with Aeglos.[2] Elrond Half-Elven served as his second-in-command during the campaign. After many gruelling battles, the army managed to break through the Black Gate and corner Sauron's forces at the foot of Mount Doom. Sauron himself was drawn out in physical form. Gil-galad engaged Sauron but the Dark Lord got the better of him, grabbing Gil-galad by the neck. Gil-galad was then killed, being engulfed in the flames caused by the power of Sauron as his comrade Elendil watched.[1]
Legacy[]
Gil-galad's heirlooms remained with Elrond: he inherited Vilya and took Gil-galad's crown and his spear Aeglos back to Rivendell where it would remain a relic of a past time. It sat next to the shards of Narsil, the broken sword of Elendil and Isildur. The mural opposite the broken sword shows the body of the fallen Gil-galad at the feet of Isildur with his shield, and his banner falling down.

Behind the scenes[]
Even though his death scene is deleted, you can still see him fighting orcs with his spear in one scene. In the books it was actually Gil-galad and Elendil who threw down Sauron. They themselves perished, but they managed to wound Sauron enough to defeat him.
