Girion was a man and Lord of Dale during the time of its destruction. When Smaug attacked, he tried to slay the dragon with a Black Arrows from a Dwarvish Wind-lance but failed and died in the attempt. His family survived and his descendant Bard, finished off what he didn't and killed Smaug many years later.
