The Goblin King, also known as the Great Goblin, was an unusually large goblin chieftain who ruled over the degenerated denizens of Goblin-town, near the High Pass in the Misty Mountains.
History
The dwarven company was captured after falling into a trap, by a group of Goblins. While the prisoners were being escorted to the heart of Goblin-Town, the Great Goblin began to sing along with his subjects, proudly calling the 'music' one of his own compositions. Balin answered by calling it an abomination, shortly before the hulking creature asked the dwarves about their purpose in these lands. When Bofur, Dori and Óin made up some motives, he became infuriated, ordering the dwarves to be tortured, before Thorin Oakenshield stepped forward. The Great Goblin feigned immediate respect, until he started mocking the exiled king by telling him that he had no kingdom which made him a nobody. He then revealed that Azog the Defiler had put a price on Thorin's head, ''just the head, nothing attached'', after which he sent a message to the Pale Orc that he had Azog's "prize".
As he sung about how the dwarves would be tortured, killed and eaten, the blade Orcrist was found, prompting the goblins to attack the company. Gandalf arrived and urged his friends to fight for their lives. Thorin engaged the king, causing him to lose his balance and fall from his throne. As the company was about to escape, the Great Goblin resurfaced and confidently confronted the wizard who slew him with ease. His body fell to the depths of the cave system.
Legacy
With his death, the hatred of the orcs for the dwarves intensified: Goblin mercenaries took up arms for Sauron's cause, joining the forces commanded by Azog in the Battle of Five Armies under the promise of revenge and handsome rewards for serving the Dark Lord.

Trivia
- Given his great stature and individuality, it is conceivable that the Goblin King was one of the demonic orcs (Boldogs, the Orc-shaped Maia mentioned in Tolkien's works) that served Morgoth and later Sauron as great chiefs of the lesser orcs.
