"The Age of Men is over. The Time of the Orc has come."
Gothmog, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

Gothmog, also called the Lieutenant of Morgul, was the Castellan of the fortress Minas Morgul, acting as second-in-command to its Lord, the Witch-king of Angmar, and commanding his army.

A deformed Morannon Orc who had pushed through countless battles, Gothmog became one of the highest-ranking Orc commanders within Sauron's forces, taking orders from the Lord of the Nazgûl himself. During the Siege of Gondor, he directed both the conquest of the ruined city of Osgiliath and then the large-scale assault on the capital of Minas Tirith, while the Morgul Lord focused on Gandalf. When the great gates would not give up, Gothmog called upon the battering ram known as Grond, which achieved the task, allowing his troops to storm the lower levels of Minas Tirith. For all his experience as a veteran, the Lieutenant of Morgul could not hold back the newly-arrived Rohirrim led by Théoden. As the battle unfurled between the warriors of Rohan and Mordor, Gothmog engaged Théoden's Nice, Éowyn, but was put down without much effort. After the shieldmaiden slee the Witch-king himself, the wounded Orc commander saw his chance to even the score and pursued her. Gothmog's attempt to strike down Éowyn was stopped by Aragorn and Gimli, who felled the Lieutenant of Morgul.

History[]

Gothmog was bred either in Minas Morgul or in Mordor itself. He climbed through the ranks of Sauron's forces and eventually became second in command of the army of the dead city under the Witch King of Angmar.

War of the Ring[]

During the War of the Ring, Gothmog was tasked with leading the Army of Minas Morgul to war with Gondor, Sauron believing the One Ring to be in Minas Tirith at the time. Gothmog was among the Orcs who marched out of Minas Morgul's gates and he took an attack force to Osgiliath by boat to overrun Faramir and his men.

Osgiliath attack[]

On the boats, some of the Orcs were being too noisy and Gothmog told them to be quiet so they didn't alert the enemy of their approach. Faramir had seen the Orcs coming however and the men hid in the tunnels until some of the Orcs had gone past and then attacked with the element of surprise. The sheer numbers of Orcs kept Gothmog's force on the winning side of the battle and although Faramir and his men held out to morning, they were forced to flee back to Minas Tirith. The ringwraiths came to assist and chased the Gondorians all the way back near Minas Tirith.

Siege of Gondor[]

Following his successful taking of Osgiliath, Gothmog met with the Witch King and they planned their attack on Minas Tirith. The Orcs surrounded the city and began a siege that lasted a while. Gothmog ordered boulders to be catapulted at the city which dealt devastating structural damage to the cities walls. Gandalf the White began taking charge of the defence of Minas Tirith and the Gondorians began firing back. Gothmog ordered his men to stay put but when one boulder was about to hit him he stepped aside and spat at it. Gothmog ordered the Great Beasts to bring up Grond at nightfall and the Orcs managed to breach the main gate, hordes of Orcs and Easterlings swarming through the streets of the city. Gothmog ordered them to go through the city and kill all that stood in their way.

Battle of the Pelennor Fields[]

Suddenly a host of Rohhirim led by King Théoden arrived to give Gondor aid. They lined up and charged much to Gothmog's dismay. He ordered the archers on that side to fire at the oncoming riders and were only able to take out a small amount. The Rohhirim broke up the Orcs, having taken them by surprise. The Orcs eventually fell back when the Mûmakil and Haradrim arrived, hiding behind the large elephant-like creatures. During the chaos, Gothmog takes on Éowyn who had been knocked from her horse in the charge. Éowyn managed to injure Gothmog's leg but he was not killed and continued to crawl about the battlefield, avoiding death. Éowyn managed to destroy the Witch King and it is at this point that Gothmog gets up and approaches her and Merry. Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli had arrived with the Army of the Dead and Aragorn and Gimli injured Gothmog as he approached Éowyn before Aragorn stabbed him, killing him.

Bases[]

Minas Morgul[]

Gothmog spent time in Minas Morgul readying for war on Gondor. When Sauron gave the order, Gothmog marched out of Minas Morgul towards Osgiliath to aid the force of Orcs already there.

Osgiliath[]

After taking the ruined city from Faramir and his men, Osgiliath became the new base of operations for Gothmog and the Witch King. When Faramir tried to retake the city with a group of men, Orcs at the wall spotted them and Gothmog ordered his men to shoot them down. Gothmog would then take his force, joining up with the whole army and set up outside Minas Tirith where he commanded the Siege of Gondor.
