"I've only ever served you, my Lord."
Gríma, (lying) to Théoden, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

Gríma, often called Wormtongue, was once the royal counselor of Théoden, the ninth King of Rohan. After being bought, he became Saruman's mole and the de facto steward of Rohan.

Gríma desired to take hand of his Théoden's niece, Éowyn, as his own and Saruman promised him exactly that in exchange for his service. Wormtongue used poisons that sapped the King's strength, aging and wearing him out, while making him susceptible to possession by the White Wizard. Gríma's policies allowed the influence of Saruman and his dark master, Sauron over Rohan to grow, as the lack of patrols and defense led to the hordes of Dunland and Isengard moving at will across the villages. Surrounding himself with his own bodyguard, Wormtongue started removing those that were loyal to the King and challenged him. He thus poisoned Théoden's dying son, Théodred, [1], before banishing Théoden's nephew, Éomer. Wormtongue's stewarship came to an end soon enough and his treachery confirmed. After Gandalf freed Théoden, Gríma fled to Saruman at Orthanc in Isengard as a mere footman, reporting the presence of Isildur's heir and the Rohirrim's retreat to Helm's Deep. But when the army that would destroy the world of Men was revealed, Wormtongue was shaken: only now did he understand the true horror of the Dark Lord and his instrument, the White Wizard.

By the time of the Battle of Helm's Deep and the Ents' assault on Isengard, Gríma seemed to regret joining Sauron's side, being at least dismayed by the recent events. As Saruman confronted his enemies, he appeared behind him. Théoden encouraged Gríma to leave Saruman, reminding he had not always been his slave. But the corrupted Wizard would not grant Wormtongue release from his service, even slapping him down. Having endured enough mistreatment, Gríma stabbed Saruman in the back, but his cowardly act of vengeance was met by an arrow shot by one of Gandalf's companions, Legolas Greenleaf, that ended his life.
