Gundabad Wargs were a vicious breed of Warg that hailed from Mount Gundabad. A ferocious stock eager to sink their deadly fangs into their prey, they were harnessed as scouts and fast mounts by Sauron's hunters.
History[]
The Gundabad Wargs were a more wolfish-like breed of Warg distinguishable by their long snout, sharp ears, knife-sharp fangs, brown or grey fur and howling. Emboldened by Sauron slowly revealing himself these beasts have headed from Gundabad to the wilderness' plains and forests, often ridden by Hunter Orcs, as well as near Dol Guldur.
Azog's hunting party was mounted on such Wargs in their pursuit of the Thorin Oakenshield's Company, attacking them on the Great East Road before being driven off by a cavalry of Knights of Rivendell, only to track down and ambush the group in a pine forest later on. However, the burning cone trick of Gandalf (which fended off the Wargs that were trying to climb the trees), and the courage of the dwarves bought enough time for the Great Eagles to arrive and save the Company by lifting up some of the Wargs and casting them down to their doom or bringing the branches of the trees crushing upon them, before taking the dwarves to Carrock. As Azog planned his attack upon the fellowship, his son Bolg appeared on his Warg to relay the summons from Sauron at Dol Guldur.
Flesh-starved Gundabad Wargs were seen to be kept in the cess pits of Dol Guldur and later accompanied the rest of Azog's army as they marched to claim Erebor for the Dark Lord. During the Battle of Five Armies, a significant party of Wargs and wolf-riders chase the chariot driven by Balin, Dwalin, Fíli and Kíli on a frozen lake, harrying them in an attempt to prevent them from reaching Azog. Eventually, Dwalin, Fili and Killi cut some of the rams loose to ride to Ravenhill, while Balin brandishes the chariot's mounted crossbow to shoot the approaching wave of Wargs.
