Helm Hammerhand was the ninth King of Rohan during the Second Age. He was given a Ring of Power by Sauron and went crazy. He turned into one of Sauron's Nazgûl and was killed for good when the Dark Lord was defeated at the end of the Third Age.

History[]

Helm Hammerhand fathered a daughter during the Third Age named Berwyn. He ruled his people in Edoras and was a noble leader. Hammerhand refused to give the warlord Siric permission to take his daughter in marriage and caused the man to plot against him. Siric and his men ambushed Helm and Berwyn in the forest, shooting Hammerhand in the back with multiple arrows and taking Berwyn.

About to die from his injuries, Hammerhand was visited by the angelic figure of Annatar, (Sauron in disguise), who offered him a Ring of Power. Hammerhand accepted the ring, which healed him from his injuries but brought him under the corrupt power of Sauron. Hammerhand took his men and lay siege to Siric's fortress.

Upon finding Siric, Hammerhand raised his hammer to kill the man. Siric plead for his life, asking Hammerhand to spare him based on the fact that his actions would start a war. Hammerhand told him that war had already begun and struck out. Berwyn ran out in front in an attempt to stop her father and Hammerhand accidentally struck his own daughter down. Enraged, Hammerhand went on a rampage, killing not only Siric and his men, but also one of his own captains.

Hammerhand submitted to the power of the ring and became a Nazgûl, serving the will of Sauron. He took part in the Siege of Minas Ithil and served the Witch King of Angmar during the War for Mordor.
