High Elven Infantrymen, or Ñoldor Warriors, were the Elven warriors of the High Elves under High King Gil-galad. They operated during the Last Alliance of Men and Elves, in the War of the Last Alliance.

History[]

In the waining years of the Second Age[1], Dark Lord Sauron was a threat to all of Middle-earth. High King Gil-galad and King Elendil of the Númenóreans formed an alliance of Men and of Elves to march upon Mordor and defeat Sauron.[2] Gil-galad spent two years gathering High Elves to serve as infantrymen in this army.[1]

The High Elf warriors with Gil-galad travelled to Amon-sûl where they met Elendil and Isildur. From there they travelled to Rivendell where they spent three years forging armor and weaponry in preparation. Here they were joined by High Elves of Rivendell.[1]

When they were finally ready, the alliance moved out over the Misty Mountains. They were joined by Elves from Greenwood and Lothlórien on their way past and prepared to assault Mordor.[1]

War of the Last Alliance[]

The High Elves in the alliance fought alongside other Elves and the Númenórean warriors in the Battle of Dagorlad, meeting the hundreds-of-thousands of Mordor Orcs that spilled out of the Black Gate.[1]

Eventually the Orcs were pushed back into Mordor. Gil-galad and Elrond led the High Elves alongside the Númenóreans in a Siege of Barad-dûr. When Sauron himself entered the battlefield, Gil-galad and Elendil were killed, leaving Elrond in charge of the High Elf warriors.[1] When Isildur took up his fathers sword and used it to defeat Sauron's physical form, a massive shockwave sent many of the Elven warriors flying off their feet.[2]

Armor and Weaponry[]

Armor[]

The High Elf armor set was designed to reflect the beauty of nature in Middle-earth, much like their other gear. The armor was forged in both Lindon and Rivendell during the three year preparation period. It was designed to protect their top half, leaving their legs exposed to allow for dexterity and freedom of movement. The arms were protected with cauldrons and bracers. The cloak worn in addition to the armor was made of Elven silk. The helmets bore the insignia of their High King, Gil-galad.

Sword[]

The Elven sword was around five feet tall, half of which was taken up by the long handle which was mostly wielded with two hands for control. The fast attack speed of Elves allowed them to reach enemies very quickly with the long blade.[1]

Longbow[]

Some of the High Elf warriors were armed with longbows. These had a long range of 350 yards and were extremely effective against the Orc ranks during the War of the Last Alliance.[1]

Shield[]

Second Age Elf shields were light and manoeuvrable. They were designed to reflect the natural designs of Middle-earth with their leaf shapes and markings. The edges of the shield were extremely sharp, allowing it to double as a weapon if necessary. It was able to be wielded two-handed or just with one hand due to the handgrip that extended from the top of the shield all the way to the bottom. The circular cutouts on either side could be used to place a spear in.[1]

Polearm[]

The long glaive weapon used by the High Elves allows them to attack Orcs at a distance.[1]
