Isengard

Isengard, industrialized under Saruman

Isengard was a Númenórean fortress of the Second Age. It fell under the control of Saruman the White during the Third Age, which he used to build an army of Uruk-hai. The tower of Orthanc was located in the middle of Isengard.

Geography[]

Isengard is located in the south of Middle-earth, between the Misty Mountains and the Gap of Rohan and is therefore a highly strategic position, which is why Saruman took it for his own.[1]

History[]

Construction[]

During the Second Age, the Faithful Númenóreans came to Middle-earth and founded the lands of Gondor and Arnor.[2] During the rule of the Kings of Gondor, Isengard was constructed, including a wall, multiple buildings and the tower of Orthanc in the middle.[3]

Abandonment[]

After the line of Kings fell during the Third Age, Isengard began to crumble and fall. Eventually out of all the buildings in Isengard, only Orthanc and one lesser tower remained.[3]

Dunlending camp[]

During the rulership of King Déor, King Gram and King Helm Hammerhand in Rohan, the wild men of Dunland took up refuge around Orthanc, attacking and raiding Rohirrim settlements and causing chaos.[3]

Lord of Isengard[]

At some point, the Istari Saruman the White went to Isengard and took control of the fortress as part of his grand scheme[4], becoming the Lord of Isengard.[1] After using the Palantír to communicate with Sauron himself, Saruman fell into darkness with the desire for power.[5]
