Legolas and Tauriel went to investigate the fortress of Gundabad, fearing that the Orc, Bolg, was preparing troops for war. Upon arrival they witnessed Bolg and his army leaving for the Lonely Mountain to reinforce Azog's army in the Battle of Five Armies.
Prelude[]
After chasing down the Hunter Orcs with Tauriel following the Dwarves' escape from the Woodland Realm's dungeons with Bilbo's aid, Legolas catches up with them in Lake-town, attacking Bard's family. He, alongside Tauriel, dispatches them quickly, with Legolas following the Orcs in pursuit, while Tauriel tends to the wounded Kili, who she is growing attached to. As Legolas kills every Orc he catches up to, he finally comes face to face with Bolg, whom he challenges with Orcrist. After a long and brutal duel with Bolg and two other Orcs, he takes a moment to recover, following a nosebleed from the giant Gundabad Orc's blows. He follows the escaping Bolg, Warg-bound on a horse.
He then encounters a Warg pack which was awaiting Bolg, whose members carried the mark of Gundabad, an Orc stronghold in the distant North, which had long died out, which concerned the Elf prince greatly
After Smaug razed Lake-town and was killed by Bard, the descendant of Girion, Legolas meets up with Tauriel who had helped the Dwarves survive the conflagration, and, despite learning of her banishment by his father from a messenger, he asks her company in his ride to Gundabad, also warning Bard of his fears of the Gundabad Orcs coming from the North to claim the unguarded Erebor following Smaug's death, for it's great wealth and strategic position.
The mission[]
As Legolas and Tauriel reached Gundabad, he spoke of it's history as the stronghold of the ancient enemy kingdom of Angmar, where the Orcs kept their armories and weapons of war. Legolas later speaks of his mother's death in Angmar, which left her unable to be buried in a grave, and therefore, no memory for him to grieve upon, after his father refusing to speak of her. They then waited for nightfall to enter and investigate, as it's a fell place.
Aftermath[]
As night set in, Tauriel implored to enter the dark kingdom's lands, which was immediately followed by thousands of Gundabad Bats swarming over to the fortress, which Legolas recognizes as bred for war. They regroup with Bolg commanding legions of Gundabad Orc soldiers and Berserkers, which led to them riding back as quickly as possible to warn Erebor and Dale.
The Gundabad Orc army arrived at first in Ravenhill through the Berserker Orcs led by Bolg, fighting off Thorin, and his warriors, and being taken out by Legolas, who also took out an entire platoon of Gundabad Orcs on the way. While the Berserker Orcs were all killed by Thorin and Legolas, the approaching Gundabad Orc army was decimated by the reinforcements of the Great Eagles and Beorn.
