Mountain Troll refers to a few sub-species of Troll in Middle-earth that hail from it's many mountain ranges.
Sub-species[]
- Mountain Troll (Mordor)
- Mountain Troll (Stone-troll) - Stone Trolls were a variant of Mountain Troll that turned if exposed to sunlight.
- Gundabad Troll - The mountain trolls from Gundabad
Behind the Scenes[]
The Trolls seen operating the gates in Mordor in The Two Towers are definitely Mountain Trolls but The Lord of the Rings: Weapons and Warfare say that the forces of Gondor were unsure whether the Trolls attacking during the Siege of Minas Tirith were Mountain Trolls or rather Olog-hai.[1]
Mountain Troll is used in-universe to refer to multiple sub-species of Troll. The Mountain Trolls seen in The Two Towers[1] are stated to be different from the ones in An Unexpected Journey[2], despite the obvious difference of not turning to stone. The War Trolls that arrive with Azog in The Battle of the Five Armies are also called Mountain Trolls in some sources[3] but they are also known as Gundabad Trolls[4]. It therefore follows that each of these three variants of Troll are actually different varieties of Troll, all referred to in-universe as Mountain Trolls.[5]
