The Nazgûl were former Kings of Men who were corrupted by Sauron's Rings of Power and served him in a wraith-like form. There was always nine of them although some were replaced with others throughout history.
History[]
Formation[]
Nine Kings of Men were gifted the nine rings of Men, forged by the Dark Lord Sauron. When Sauron forged the One Ring and revealed himself, they were enslaved by him eternally. Sauron was defeated during the War of the Last Alliance, causing the Nazgûl to go into hiding.[1]
Resurgence[]
When Sauron returned to Mordor during the Third Age and began to make it his base of operations, the Nazgûl returned in full force and became Sauron's Generals in retaking Mordor and it's surroundings.[1]
