Nori was a Dwarf of Durin's folk, brother to Dori and Ori and member of the company of Thorin Oakenshield. He left his family at a young age and saw the quest as a way to reacquaint himself with his brothers.
History[]
Early Life[]
Nori was likely born in the Blue Mountains and lived there as a young Dwarf with his older brother Dori and younger brother Ori. His family was well-spoken of amongst Durin's folk but a young Nori would leave his family and lead a nomadic life, at some point working as a miner.[1]
Word reached Nori of a quest to reclaim the lost Dwarven kingdom of Erebor and he decided to return to the Blue Mountains and join the expedition. Nori didn't believe much in the reinstatement of a King but went on the quest to reacquaint himself with Dori and Ori as well as get a share of the great treasure hoard.[2]
Quest for Erebor begins[]
Nori arrived in the Shire as instructed by Gandalf the Grey who was responsible for convincing Thorin Oakenshield to retake Erebor. He arrived at the door of Bag End with his two brothers as well as Gandalf, Bifur, Bofur, Bombur, Óin and Glóin and when Bilbo Baggins opened the door, they all fell onto the floor just inside. Nori ate with the other Dwarves while they waited for Thorin to arrive. Bilbo snatched a doily off Nori, telling him it wasn't a dishcloth. When Bilbo was talking to Gandalf about the Dwarves, Nori was bickering with Bofur over some food. The Dwarves began throwing around the dirty dishes, cleaning them as they went. As they did this they sung a song to mock Bilbo's worry. A knock on the door let them know of Thorin's arrival and everyone went silent. Thorin led a meeting with the Dwarves at the table, telling them that Dáin and the Dwarves of the Iron Hills would not be joining them. They plotted to take back the Lonely Mountain and how to deal with Smaug. Gandalf provided a map of Erebor with the location of a hidden door as well as a key for the door, both of which had been given to him by Thorin's father Thráin in Dol Guldur. Nori sang with the Dwarves late into the night and then slept to prepare for the journey ahead.
Nori and the other members of the Company left in the morning and reached the edges of Hobbiton and were caught up to by a running Bilbo Baggins who had decided to join the company. Nori had made a bet with Óin, believing that Bilbo wouldn't turn up and threw his owed money to the older Dwarf.
When the company set up camp in the Lone-lands for the night, Nori and the other Dwarves slept around a fireplace. Balin told the story of the Battle of Azanulbizar to Fíli, Kíli and Bilbo after they heard a pack of Orcs in the distance. When Balin finished the story he drew attention to Thorin's great leadership and how he knew he was the one to serve. Nori and the other Dwarves had all woken up and were looking at their leader at this point.
The company stopped briefly in the Trollshaw Forest in an abandoned farmhouse and Gandalf got upset with Thorin and went on ahead without them. When Bilbo was captured by three Trolls that night while he was investigating them with Fíli and Kíli, Nori and the other Dwarves all fought the Trolls before being forced to drop their weapons when Bilbo's life was threatened. The Trolls slowly began to roast some of the Dwarves above the fireplace and Nori was one of the Dwarves tied up above the flames. Bilbo was able to distract the Trolls long enough for dawn to arrive and Gandalf returned just in time to split a rock, letting the sunlight through into the Troll-camp, turning the Trolls to stone.
When the company found the troll hoard with treasure and weapons inside. Bofur, Glóin and Nori discovered the gold and decided it was a waste to leave it sitting there where anyone could take it. Glóin told Nori to get a shovel, planning on returning later to retrieve it. Thorin told the three Dwarves to follow him back outside, believing the hoard to be a foul place.
The company drew near to Rivendell and were attacked by a Hunter Orc pack led by Yazneg. Radagast the Brown who had found them and was talking to Gandalf, offered to draw the Wargs and Orcs away, getting onto his sled. Nori followed Gandalf through the rocky wilderness, trying to stay out of the Orcs line of sight. When the Wargs ran past in front of them, Nori was the first to reach the hiding place behind a large rock as a single Orc and Warg sensed them and climbed onto the rock from the other side, sniffing and trying to find the origin of the smell. Kíli was forced to shoot down the Warg and the Dwarves killed the Orc, the sound alerting Yazneg and the other Orcs to their location. As the Orc pack closed in on them, Gandalf led them towards the entrance to the hidden passage to Rivendell. Nori and the other Dwarves climbed down into the cave as the Knights of Rivendell arrived and massacred the remaining Orcs and Wargs, (save Yazneg and Fimbul).
Rivendell[]
The pathway led them straight to Rivendell as Gandalf had planned although Thorin had disapproved of. They walked over the bridge and onto a round platform. Lindir came out and greeted them before Elrond returned with his cavalry. The Dwarves, including Nori, got defensive as the Elves surrounded them, their history with the Elves making them immediately wary of any of the species. Elrond offered the Dwarves food and when the Dwarves didn't understand his elvish they thought he may have been insulting them but Gandalf clarified Elrond's statement int he common tongue. Nori was present at the dinner table as the Elves provided food and musical entertainment. Bofur began to sing a Dwarvish merry song and the Dwarves including Nori began throwing food and banging on the table, disgusting Elrond, Lindir and the other Elves. Following the meal, Nori bathed in a fountain with the other Dwarves, standing outside the pool when Elrond and Lindir looked on from afar.
Misty Mountains[]
While Gandalf was in a meeting with the White Council, Nori and the other members of the company slipped away, making their way out of the valley and into the Misty Mountains. After a long trek, they reached the High Pass and began to ascend. It began to storm and the pass became extremely dangerous. They realised they had walked into the middle of a battle of Stone-giants. They had also walked onto the legs of a giant, which got up off the mountain and joined the fight. When one of the legs hit the side of the mountain, Nori was amongst the Dwarves that got stuck on the giant and split up from Thorin. They all managed to escape and made it into a cave in the side of the mountain, stopping there for the night.
Goblin-town[]
The cave floor opened up beneath Nori and the other members of the company fell into a goblin-trap inside the mountain cave system. They were captured by the Goblins in Goblin-town and taken to the Goblin-king. As they were captured, Bilbo knelt down and managed to go unnoticed by the Goblins and Nori turned around and saw him slip away as the Dwarves were taken to the throne-room. Gandalf arrived and rescued the Dwarves from the Goblin-king and his minions and they ran through Goblin-town, killing the Goblins that stood in their path. When Goblins charged at them from the front, Nori helped Dwalin pick up a long branch and they used it to knock down the approaching imps. They stopped on a platform to skirmish with some Goblins and Nori stabbed one through the prongs of a ladder. Some Goblins tried to swing over on ropes but Nori and some other Dwarves cut the ropes holding up the platform they were swinging from, causing them to all fall. After continuing over the platforms and bridges, the Dwarves followed Gandalf behind the large boulder which crushed all the Goblins in it's path. They were stopped by the Goblin-king who was killed by Gandalf. The bridge underneath them collapsed and they landed in a heap at the bottom of the cave before having the dead body of king land on top of them. Dwalin helped Nori out of the rubble as the swarms of Goblins ran towards them. Gandalf led them towards the exit of the mountains.
Out of the Frying Pan and Into the Fire[]
The Dwarves and Gandalf ran into the pine forest on the east side of the Misty Mountains and Gandalf conducted a head-count, realising Bilbo was missing. Nori, remembered seeing Bilbo slip away when they were first captured and told Gandalf. Thorin believed Bilbo had abandoned them but the Hobbit suddenly arrived back at the company and told the Dwarves that he came back because the Dwarves didn't have a home and he would try and help them reclaim it if he could. They were interrupted by the arrival of Azog the Defiler and his hunting pack of Hunter Orcs and Gundabad Wargs. The company reached a cliff and were forced to climb the pine trees as the Wargs snarled at them from below. Nori was given flaming acorns by Gandalf and helped throw them at the Wargs below. The tree they were all on fell to a horizontal position over the cliff's edge. While Nori and the other Dwarves were struggling to stay on the tree, Thorin got up and walked towards Azog. Azog easily knocked Thorin down and ordered another Orc to behead the Dwarf. Bilbo rescued Thorin and the Great Eagles arrived to rescue them just in time. Nori was picked up by an eagle and rode on it's back all the way to the Carrock where they were dropped off and left by the great beasts.
House of Beorn[]
The Orc pack continued to pursue the company and they hastily made their way across the Vale of Anduin towards Mirkwood. When they spotted the beast Beorn and realised that Azog would catch up to them they were forced to take refuge in a house (later revealed to be Beorn's house). In the morning, Beorn was in man-form and was chopping wood outside. Gandalf had told them Beorn wasn't fond of Dwarves and Nori suggested they slipped out the other way. Gandalf decided to introduce themselves but only a couple of Dwarves at a time, starting with himself and Bilbo as not to startle the man. Gandalf told Dwarves to wait for the signal, Bofur and Nori wondering what signal he meant. Nori came outside with Bofur, Bifur and Bombur after all the other Dwarves came out (except Thorin who came out last). Nori and the other Dwarves, (and Bilbo), were lent pony's from Beorn and Nori got onto his white pony as Gandalf talked with Beorn about the forces of evil.
Mirkwood[]
The company arrived at the entrance to Mirkwood and Gandalf left them to investigate the High Fells. Gandalf told them to follow the path at all costs and not to enter the mountain without him. The Dwarves tried to follow the path but the powerful sickness that lay upon the forest drove them crazy and drowsy. Nori led the way through but was the first to notice that they had lost the path. The company was captured by the Great Spiders which had been set loose on the forest by the Necromancer of Dol Guldur, causing a most of the sickness. Bilbo managed to escape the Dwarves and cut them free from their web cocoons. They landed on the forest floor and took up arms, fighting the spiders. Nori and the other Dwarves were surrounded by the Silvan Guard of the Woodland Realm, Bilbo still up above and therefore not seen by the Elves. Nori was taken with the other Dwarves inside Thranduil's palace and was locked up in a cell. They were rescued by Bilbo who had stolen the keys for the cells. The Hobbit led Nori and the other Dwarves into the cellar where they got into barrels and were let into the stream below. The Elves realised they were gone and notified the sentries at the river gate which was closed just as they reached it. They were suddenly attacked by Orcs led by Bolg, son of Azog, and the Elf sentries were killed. Legolas, Tauriel and the Silvan Guard arrived and fought off the Orcs while Kíli got out of his barrel to open the gate. Nori and the Dwarves flowed through the gate and down the current, pursued by the Orcs. During the chase, Nori was thrown a mace weapon by Dwalin which he then threw to Fíli who used it to take out an Orc. Nori also used an axe to help cut down a log that was hanging above the river and then helped Bombur get into a new barrel after he lost his first one. The constant current and hitting rocks caused Nori's hairdo to fall apart as they continued down the stream. The Elves reached the borders of their realm and came to a stop, watching the Dwarves escape and the Orcs continue to follow them. They eventually made it quite the distance ahead using the current and as soon as they lost the current, Thorin ordered them to move ashore.
Lake-town[]
The Dwarves were discovered on-shore by Bard the Bargeman and Balin managed to strike a deal with him to smuggle the company into Lake-town. As they boated through the lake, the Dwarves paid Bard and saw the Lonely Mountain, staring up at it in wonder. Bard told them to get into the barrels and bought some fish to fill them with, covering Nori and the other Dwarves inside the barrels. Bard then entered the gate, and the barrels were almost tipped out by Lake-town guards at the orders of Alfrid Lickspittle, the Master's aide. After evading that obstacle, Bard kicked the Dwarves out of the barrels at the marketplace and then brought them into his house via the toilet which emptied straight into the lake. Nori was the fifth Dwarf to arise through the hole, spitting out the water he had almost swallowed. Bard brought up his hidden weapons to offer the Dwarves as part of their deal. The Dwarves didn't like the weapons and started plotting to infiltrate the Lake-town armory. Bard told them not to leave until nightfall and left to investigate the name Thorin which he had seen on a tapestry. Nori and the other Dwarves were captured by the Lake-town Guards and taken to the Master. Thorin introduced himself to the Master and offered the people a share in the treasure. They were given weapons, new clothes, armour and a boat and Nori was among those that left for the mountain, Fíli, Kíli and Óin staying behind due to Kíli's injury, (Bofur getting left behind by accident). Nori sat in the middle of the boat as the left
The Hidden Door[]
Nori followed Thorin and the remaining members of the company past the ruins of Dale and tried to find the hidden door into Erebor. After finding it, the Dwarves tried to open the door for a long time, knowing they only had until the last light of that day (Durin's Day) as per the moon runes on Thorin's Map. After they couldn't find the keyhole, Thorin told Nori to do his thing, the Dwarf using a spoon and his ear to try and find the hollow section. When the sun completely set, the Dwarves gave up and left. Bilbo stayed behind, refusing to give up and discovered that the light of the moon was in fact the "last light of Durin's Day" and called the Dwarves back. Nori followed Thorin and Balin inside and looked up to the roof with Glóin as the latter read out the writing.
Smaug[]
After sending Bilbo into the halls of Erebor to retrieve the Arkenstone, Nori and the other Dwarves waited outside and grew worried when they heard Smaug awaken. The Dwarves raced into Erebor when Bilbo was returning and Smaug breathed fire towards them, forcing them to all jump into the gold below. Now trapped inside Erebor, Nori and the other Dwarves made for the service passage, trying to find a way out but discovered the corpses of their kin who had tried to escape there before. Thorin decided to face down Smaug, saying that if they were going to burn they should all burn together. They made it to the forges where they used Smaug's fire to light them. Nori stood with Thorin as the Dragon became tangled in ropes, caused by Bifur and Glóin from above. Thorin ordered them to lead the Dragon to the Gallery of the Kings. Nori and the other Dwarves stood behind the huge statue of Thrór created by the molten gold the Dwarves had made in the forges. On Thorin's signal, Nori helped the other Dwarves pull the covering off the statue, startling Smaug. The Gold began to melt as planned and it burst forwards, covering Smaug and almost setting in the hallway. Smaug burst out of the gold and crashed through Erebor's front gate, going to destroy Lake-town. Nori could only look on in horror as the horror they had unleashed unfolded before his eyes.
Reclaimed Erebor[]
As the Dwarves watched into the night, Smaug attacked Lake-town and set it alight with his fire. As morning arrived, Bilbo saw Smaug fall as he had been killed by Bard. The Dwarves began to cheer, Erebor finally being theirs. Thorin immediately had Nori and the other Dwarves begin to look for the Arkenstone within the massive hoard of gold and jewels. Fíli, Kíli, Bofur and Óin who had all survived Smaug's attack, arrived in Erebor and reunited with Nori and the other Dwarves. Thorin decided to go back on his word and instead of giving the peope of Lake-town what was promised he had the Dwarves and Bilbo prepare for war with the men and Thranduil's Elves. Nori put on regal armour insid ethe armoury of Erebor and armed himself with a regal mace and shield.
Siege of Erebor and Battle of Five Armies[]
When Thranduil, Bard and their troops arrived at dawn, Nori was placed on the ramparts with the other Dwarves. He ducked along with everyone else except Thorin when the Elves aimed their bows up at the ramparts to make a point. Dáin Ironfoot arrived with an army of Iron Hills Dwarves and Nori cheered along with the other Dwarves on the Ramparts. The Elves and Dwarves engaged in a short battle before Azog's force attacked them all. The Dwarves, Elves and Men engaged the Orcs but Thorin ordered his company not to go and fight, believing blood spent was not worth the price of the treasure. Nori and the other Dwarves sat around in disbelief as Dáin's forces were being slaughtered outside. Thorin finally came to his senses after a while and returned to the Dwarves and asked them to follow him one last time. Nori and the other Dwarves raised their weapons, ready to follow their leader into battle. The Dwarves exited Erebor and rallied with the Iron Hills Dwarves, Nori third in line beside Dwalin behind Thorin in a huge Dwarf charge that broke into the Orc ranks. Nori mowed down many of the Guldur Orcs with his mace as they charged. As the Orc ranks began to fall apart, Nori locked weapons with a brute Guldur Orc and struggled to take him down. Bofur grabbed a throwing axe and threw it at the Orc who was battling Nori and it impaled the Orc in the face. Nori took the axe from the dead Orc and used it to throw at an Orc that was fighting Ori. Nori and Fili helped Bofur get onto the Truncated Troll "Stumpy" which he took control of. Nori continued fighting in the valley while Thorin took Balin, Dwalin, Fíli and Kíli up to Ravenhill to defeat Azog.
After the battle[]
Nori went with his companions up to Ravenhill to find Thorin had successfully killed Azog but with the cost of his life. They all knelt around their king and wept. Nori later attended the funeral of Thorin, Fíli and Kíli and then the Coronation of their new king Dáin Ironfoot. Bilbo decided to leave on the day of Dáin's coronation and told Balin he was going to slip away quietly and to say goodbye to the other Dwarves. Nori and the other Dwarves were all standing behind him ready to say goodbye and smiled and teared up as Bilbo bid them farewell and told them if they were ever passing Bag End to come pay him a visit. Nori would go on to serve King Dáin in Erebor.
Personality and Traits[]
Nori, while a brother of both Dori and Ori, is very unlike both of them. He is known to be crafty and evasive and liked talking about himself. He is thought of by Dori as quite rebellious and the older brother keeps a close eye on the middle brother during their quest for Erebor.[1]
Trivia[]
- In Tolkien's The Hobbit, Nori is actually the cousin of Dori and Ori, not their brother.
- It is unknown what Nori's fate after The Battle of the Five Armies is but it is widely assumed that he served Dáin and then Thorin III Stonehelm in Erebor and fought in the Battle of Dale.
