Ogres were a race from the Misty Mountains of Middle-earth, that lived in the mountainous fortress of Gundabad. Molded by Sauron, they eagerly came forth to answer his summons and fight for his cause.
History[]
Ogres were a gruesome folk, dull and hideous and yet they made effective shock troops: stronger than an Orc, able to cooperate in small groups and armed with spiked wooden clubs. Though they appeared mostly as mythical beasts in Hobbit folklore, these ogres had been bred by Sauron in times past and lived together with the Orcs of Gundabad.
Called by Sauron to Dol Guldur, they joined Azog's attack force in the Battle of Five Armies. One commanded a group of Catapult Trolls. A few ogres made their way into Dale during the Siege of Dale and two were killed by Bard. A group of four or five ogres were out in the final waves of the army and were ordered by Azog to destroy the Dwarf war chariots. They ran out from the orc lines and knocked the vehicles over, killing the Dwarves driving them. Ogres were ordered to stop Balin, Dwalin, Fili and Kili in their War Chariot on their way to Ravenhill. They reached it just at it went over a bump and the spiked wheels beheaded them all.
Behind the Scenes[]
Ogres are mentioned once in Tolkien's the Hobbit during Bilbo's riddle competition but possible were mythical creatures rather than an actual creature that existed. Their first non-canonical appearance, however, was in the earliest versions of what became The Silmarillion, where they are counted among the servants of Morgoth and later Sauron.
In the film-verse the Ogres do exist and fight in the Battle of the Five Armies.
