Sharku was a veteran Isengard Orc captain in the service of Saruman, Sauron's chief vassal, in the late Third Age.
The vicious chief of a pack of Warg-riders, the battle-scarred Sharku had allegedly fought in the "goblin wars", and had harrassed Sauron's enemies ever since, making incursions into Rohan and Gondor; his attacks at the Dark Lord's whim almost led to the deaths of the two realms' kings.
During the War of the Ring, the captain allied himself with the fallen White Wizard, lending him his pack's services. From Isengard, the warmongering Orc ranged into Rohan, spreading chaos and death. At Saruman's behest, Sharku and his Warg-riders waylaid Théoden's Rohirrim on their journey to Helm's Deep; during the ensuing skirmish, Sharku was mortally-wounded by the Dúnadan Aragorn.
History[]
An old Orc hailing from the Misty Mountains, Sharku was rumored to have been a veteran of the ancient 'goblin-wars' of the First Age,[1] that saw the sacking of Gondolin by the forces of Morgoth.[2]
Since then it seems, Sharku had been in the service of Sauron, leading a pack of ravenous Warg-riders against his Master's enemies. Deriving his enjoyment from sowing pain and destruction, the warmongering Orc captain made incursions into the territories of the Rohirrim and the Gondorians, shying not from battling armed warriors. These raids on his Master's behalf almost cost the very lives of the two realms' kings.[3]
After the end of the Watchful Peace, the captain saw new opportunities presented by an alliance with the Dark Lord's new chief vassal, the fallen White Wizard. Sharku eagerly threw his backing behind Saruman's banner,[3] being both welcomed at Isengard and provided with pens in the pits for his Warg beasts in return.[4]
During the War of the Ring, the sly captain and his warband were used by the corrupted Wizard to harass his adversaries. Sharku's Warg-riders made attacks on the Rohirrim, running down defenseless peasants, while also making way for the second army Sauron had bid Saruman build him.[2]
Informed by Gríma Wormtongue that Théoden and his people were leaving Edoras, Saruman tasked Sharku with attacking them on the road to Helm's Deep; the corrupted Wizard's instructions were met by the cruel captain's grin. After sending a scout ahead, the Orc chief and his Warg-riders hastened over the hills to engage the warriors of Rohan in battle. During the bloody skirmish that ensued, the mounted Sharku was grappled by the Dúnadan Aragorn, who, after a brief struggle, managed to stab him with his dagger. The mortally-wounded Orc fell of his Warg, which tumbled of the cliff with the Ranger to his supposed death. As he lay dying and throatily laughing at Aragorn's fate, Sharku was spotted by Gimli, who offered to ease his passing with his axe should he say what had happened. Mockingly, Sharku revealed Aragorn's apparent death as Legolas Greenleaf and Gimli questioned him, before dying of his wounds.[4]
