While this part of the story is cut from all versions of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring it is confirmed to have happened by the reference book The Lord of the Rings: Weapons and Warfare. The scene was indeed filmed and is part of the cut content that can be seen in behind the scenes videos.

The skirmish is a playable level in The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth, although it's worth noting that the game developers decided to keep Gandalf alive for the events of the campaign to allow players to keep using him.
