The Squint-eyed Southerner was a Man in the Third Age and a ruffian who spent much time at the Prancing Pony in Bree.
History[]
The Squint-eyed Southerner was the son of another ruffian of the same name, taking after his father's profession.[1]
During the Hunt for the One Ring, the Southerner was hired by both the Witch-king of Angmar and Saruman the White. He became aware of a someone named "Baggins" from the Shire that was carrying the One Ring and kept an eye out in Bree.[2] The Southerner tried to get Harley Bramble to join his ruffian band and expressed frustration when the ranger Eradan walked up to their conversation.[3]
When Frodo Baggins and three other Hobbits arrived at the Prancing Pony, he watched them from afar while enjoying a drink from the bar. [4]
The Ruffians were later kicked out of Bree and the Southerner's fate is unknown, (Harley Bramble later telling Eradan that he saw to it that the Southerner wouldn't hurt anybody else again).[3]
Behind the Scenes[]
The southerner's role in the book was cut from the film for time as was Bill Ferny's. However an extra in the Prancing Pony was later identified as the southerner in The Lord of the Rings: Trading Card Game.
The Southerner appeared in The Lord of the Rings: War in the North voiced by Steve Blum, although his design differs slightly from the extra retconned to appear in the film. They look similar enough, the main difference being the game-model's hair being dark.
