- The Necromancer grows in power in Dol Guldur and sets the Great Spiders loose into the forest. The Elves of the Woodland Realm led by Prince Legolas and Captain Tauriel, enter conflict with the creatures although never following them back to their source due to their borders not extending that far.[2]
June[]
19th
- The Dwarves selected to join Thorin Oakenshield on his Quest to Erebor, leave Ered Luin and head towards the Shire. Thorin meets with the heads of the seven Dwarf families and asks for help on his quest. He is denied help and his cousin Dáin Ironfoot sees the quest as too risky and also decides the Iron Hills Dwarves would not help.[3]
20th
- In the early hours of the morning, Gandalf the Grey enters Hobbiton and greets Bilbo Baggins, sitting outside Bag End on his bench. Gandalf suggests Bilbo accompany him on an adventure and Bilbo declines. Gandalf marks his door with a magical symbol all the same. Unknown to Bilbo, Gandalf has already selected him as the fourteenth member of Thorin's company as a burglar.
- Meeting in Bag End - The Dwarves and Gandalf arrive at Bag End and a surprised Bilbo is forced to provide food and hospitality although having no prior knowledge of the meeting. Thorin Oakenshield arrived late and told the other Dwarves the news that they were alone in their quest. They identified the signs that it was time to take back Erebor and Gandalf gave Thorin a map and key given to him by Thráin. Bilbo is given a contract but decides not to sign it. The Dwarves make plans, sing some songs and then rest until morning.
21st
Quest for Erebor[]
- The Dwarves and Gandalf leave Bag End in the early hours of the morning and start heading eastward. Bilbo awakes and realises they are gone but sees the contract still sitting nearby, unsigned. He reconsiders and decides to join the Company, running after them with the signed contract. He finally joins them and is given a pony to ride. The Dwarves and Gandalf exchange gold, having made bets on whether the Hobbit would end up joining them.[1]
- The company leaves the Shire and heads into the Lone-lands. They stay there for the night, settling down in a clearing and staring a fire. Fíli and Kíli joke about Orcs attacking with Bilbo and Thorin berates them for thinking an Orc attack was a joke. Balin then tells them the story of the Battle of Azanulbizar where Thorin led Durin's folk into victory and defeated the Pale Orc, Azog the Defiler. Bilbo asked what happened to the Pale Orc and Thorin told him that Azog had died of his wounds, not knowing that the Defiler still lived and was actively hunting them.[1]
- Yazneg, Fimbul and their pack of Orcs and Wargs spotted Thorin's company from over a cliffside and Yazneg ordered his minions to notify Azog.[1]
22nd
- The Company leaves their camp in the morning and it begins to rain. Dori asks Gandalf why he can't use his powers to stop the deluge and it sparks a conversation between the wizard and Bilbo about the five wizards.[1]
- Radagast the Brown, watching over the forest of Mirkwood, notices the magical sickness that lies upon the forest. He sees wildlife and plant-life dead or dying and spots the hedgehog, Sebastian, laying almost dead.[1]
- Radagast takes Sebastian and his family back to Rhosgobel where he tries every medicine he can think off to revive the sick hedgehog. He realises that the sickness isn't natural and therefore is a magical evil and uses a magical stone in his possession to purge the sickness. While this is happening the Great Spiders are drawn to Rhosgobel and begin climbing all over the house, breaking holes in the roof. When Sebastian is purged of the dark magic, they are no longer drawn to the place and climb off, leaving the area. Radagast exits his home and watches as they leave.[1]
- The Company travels a long way through the day and reaches the Trollshaws by evening. Gandalf recommends they continue on to Rivendell so Elrond can help them read the map given to them by Thráin. Thorin refuses to seek refuge with the Elves due to the history the Dwarves and Elves had shared. Gandalf is furious with Thorin's stubborn personality and leaves the group. They stop in an old abandoned farmers hut to spend the night.[1]
- Skirmish in Dol Guldur - Radagast tracks the Spiders back to Dol Guldur where he discovers the fortress is no longer abandoned. He is attacked by the Witch King of Angmar who drops his Morgul-blade. Radagast steals the blade and then sees the Necromancer himself, a black misty figure. Radagast flees, pursued by the Bats of Dol Guldur but manages to escape. He begins looking for Gandalf to tell him the news.[1]
- Skirmish in Trollshaw Forest - Three Stone-trolls, (Tom, Bert and William), steal two of the ponies from the Company, Myrtle and Minty, and Fíli and Kíli realise their absence. They get Bilbo to go in to free the ponies but he is discovered by the Trolls. The Dwarves attack the Trolls but are forced to lay down arms when they get their hands on Bilbo and threaten to rip him up. The Trolls prepare to cook the Dwarves on the fire and strap some of them to a rotating cooking device.[1]
23rd
- Bilbo overhears that the Trolls can't survive the light of the sun and manages to draw things out, engaging in petty banter with the Trolls and suggesting ways to cook the Dwarves and then suggesting that they have parasites. Gandalf returns and sees the Dwarves and Bilbo in captivity and walks up onto the hill next to the Troll fire, splitting a stone with his staff, which let the light of the sun through and onto the Trolls, turning them to stone.[1]
- The Company find and enter the Troll-hoard where the Trolls had been sleeping during the day. They discovered treasure and weapons of great wealth. Bofur, Glóin and Nori buried some of the gold, planning to return to retrieve it later. Gandalf and Thorin stumbled upon some elvish-blades, the wizard taking Glamdring, ("Foe Hammer") and Thorin taking Orcrist, ("Goblin-cleaver"). Gandalf also discovered a smaller Elven-blade on the floor outside, picking it up and giving it to Bilbo.[1]
- Still near the Troll-hoard, the Company was discovered by Radagast the Brown on his sled, who had come looking for Gandalf. Radagast told Gandalf what had happened in Dol Guldur and gave him the Morgul-blade as evidence.[1]
- Skirmish near Rivendell - The Company are attacked by Gundabad Warg scouts as Yazneg and his hunting party draw near. Radagast offers to draw the enemy away while they escape. The Orcs and Wargs chase Radagast on his sled with his Rabbits in a rocky wilderness near Rivendell. Gandalf leads the group towards a Hidden Passage into the valley of Imladris while not telling Thorin where they were headed. A single Orc on his Warg mount caught onto their scent and left the pack which was chasing Radagast to investigate. The Company was hiding behind a rock and the Orc rode up onto that rock. Kíli was forced to shoot the Warg down and the Orc fell down to them. The sound of them killing the Orc alerted Yazneg and the rest of the pack of their location. Yazneg ordered them to close in. Gandalf managed to get everyone into the cave at the entrance of the passage in time as the Knights of Rivendell led by Elrond arrived and massacred the Orcs and Wargs. Yazneg and Fimbul were the only survivors, escaping into the wilderness.[1]
- The Company follows the passageway which leads them into Rivendell. Thorin is mad at Gandalf for leading them there but the wizard tells him they need Elrond to help them decipher the map. Lindir steps out to meet them and tells them Lord Elrond is not home. Elrond and his Knights suddenly returned and surrounded the Company. Elrond welcomed them and offered them a meal to which they accept.[1]
- During the meal, Bofur riles up the Dwarves and they sing a song as he dances on the table much to the disgust of the Elves present. Elrond identifies the Elven-blades for Gandalf and Thorin. Bilbo sees this and wishes to show Elrond his blade but Balin tells him not to bother due to it's small size.[1]
Midsummer's Eve - 24th
- Gandalf, Thorin, Balin and Bilbo meet with Elrond privately and Gandalf encourages Thorin to show Elrond the map, which he reluctantly agrees to. Elrond identifies the moon-runes upon the map and they go outside to see if they can be read. Elrond tells Thorin that the moon-runes could only be read on the exact moon-shape and day upon which they were written. He continued to say that fate was with Thorin as the same crescent moon shone upon them that night. He read the runes out which were as follows: "Stand by the grey stone when the thrush knocks and the setting sun with the last light of Durin's Day will shine upon the key-hole." Elrond expressed displeasure when he discovered that the Dwarves did indeed intend to enter Erebor and told them that there were some who would deem it unwise.[1]
- Elrond contacts Saruman with the new details and Saruman summons Galadriel, both of them traveling towards Rivendell for a White Council meeting to discuss the matters of Thorin's quest.[1]
- At nightfall, Yazneg and Fimbul reach Weathertop and meet with Azog. Azog is enraged that they failed and feeds Yazneg to the hungry Wargs. He tells the rest of his Orcs to send out the word that Oakenshield and his companions had prices on their heads.[1]
Midsummer's Day - 25th
- Bilbo ventures down into one of the buildings where he sees the shards of Narsil and a wall painting depicting the War of the Last Alliance. He notices the ring depicted on Sauron's figure in the painting.[4]
- Elrond finds Bilbo on a balcony and asks him why he isn't with his companions. Bilbo tells the Elf that he won't be missed and that they don't think he should be on this journey. Elrond tells him he has heard Hobbits are very resilient to which Bilbo is surprised. Elrond adds that he had also heard they enjoyed the comforts of home. Bilbo tells Elrond that he had heard not to take council from the Elves as they would say both yes and no. Elrond is unamused at first but then a smile forms on his face and he offers to let Bilbo stay in Rivendell if he desires.[4]
- The Dwarves bathe in a fountain, taking off their clothing and disgusting Lindir and Elrond who are walking past. Lindir, concerned about the stress the Dwarves were causing on the kitchen, asks Elrond how long they would stay in Rivendell to which the Elf Lord tells him it was undecided.[4]
- While the Dwarves are eating another meal as evening falls, Bombur sits on a makeshift seat. Bofur throws him a sausage and the extra weight causes the seat to give way.[1]
- Bilbo overhears Gandalf and Elrond talking while he walked alone in Rivendell. Gandalf told Elrond that he was actually going to tell the Elf of their intentions to enter Erebor and he had been waiting for this very chance. Elrond was concerned about what would happen should they unleash Smaug upon Middle-earth and Gandalf reminds him that if they should succeed, their defences in the east would be strengthened. Bilbo realises that Thorin is standing behind him and is also listening. Elrond reminded Gandalf of the Dragon-sickness that had driven Thorin's father and grandfather mad. Elrond tells Gandalf that it isn't for just them to make decisions like this and redraw the map of Middle-earth.[4]
- Elrond leads Gandalf into the council chamber and as they are walking Gandalf warns the Elf that the Dwarves were determined to reclaim their homeland and would do it with or without their help. As they enter Gandalf realises Galadriel and Saruman were present. They begin to discuss Thorin's quest and other matters.[4][1]
26th
- As the early morning hours came about, Saruman asks Gandalf if he thought his plans and schemes had gone unnoticed and Gandalf tells him he is simply doing what he feels to be right. Galadriel senses that the Dragon has long been on Gandalf's mind to which the wizard confirms. Gandalf explains how Smaug owes allegiance to nobody but if he should side with the enemy, the Dragon could be used to terrible effect. Saruman claims that there is no enemy and that Sauron could never return. Gandalf asks Saruman if it bothers him that the last of the Dwarf rings should simply vanish along with Thráin. Saruman responds that without the One Ring, the other rings are powerless to Sauron and that the One Ring had been lost many years ago. Elrond and Gandalf discuss whether Middle-earth was actually at peace and Saruman tells them the signs are simply due to Gandalf's meddling. Gandalf talks about the Necromancer in Dol Guldur who was thought to be nothing more then a man dabbling in black magic but had been said to have raised the dead. Galadriel telepathically speaks to Gandalf, sensing that he carries something that Radagast had given him. Gandalf brings out the Morgul-blade and reveals it to the council. Galadriel identifies it as the Witch-king's blade and realises it had to have been buried with the Nazgûl. Saruman doesn't believe there is any proof to confirm the blade came from Angmar's grave and dismisses everything Gandalf had said. Saruman tells Gandalf he cannot condone the quest as Galadriel senses that the Dwarves and Bilbo were slipping away as they spoke and that Gandalf knew. Lindir arrives in the chamber and confirms that the Dwarves were gone.[1][4]
- Thorin and company slip away during the early morning and make their way into the Misty Mountains. When they reach the High Pass, Thorin asks Balin to lead the way.[1]
- Galadriel stays in the chamber to talk to Gandalf after the meeting. She asks whether Gandalf will follow to which he confirms. She affirms that he was right to help Thorin but that the quest had set in motion powers they did not yet understand. She asks him why he had enlisted Bilbo and he tells her that he did not know and that although Saruman believed it was great power that could fight darkness he had found that it was the little things like acts of kindness that did it. He also adds that he is afraid and that Bilbo gives him courage. Galadriel tells him not to be afraid and that he won't be alone before disappearing from his sight.[1]
- Gandalf sets out after the company from Rivendell.[1]
- Battle of the Giants - Three Stone-giants engage in battle at the High Pass and the Company of Thorin Oakenshield is almost killed when caught in the midst of the battle. Bilbo is knocked off the edge and hangs onto the cliff-edge. The Dwarves help him up, Thorin almost falling off himself. Thorin exclaims that Bilbo had no place amongst them and that he should have stayed in the Shire. They get into a cave to stay the night and sleep.[1]
- Bilbo plans to leave once all the Dwarves are asleep and he fails to walk past Bofur who is on night-watch at the cave entrance. Bofur talks to him about it and notices Bilbo's blade glow blue, meaning Orcs were nearby. The floor of the cave suddenly opened up, revealing it to be a Goblin-trap. The Dwarves and Bilbo fall into Goblin-town and are captured by the Goblins, although Bilbo manages to escape captivity and falls lower into the caves.[1]
27th
- The Goblins bring the Dwarves before the Goblin-king who sings a song with his minions, "Down, Down, Down in Goblin-town". The Goblins search the Dwarves for any hidden weapons or treasure. Óin's hearing aid is crushed by a goblin. The Goblins discover a chandelier that had been stolen by the Dwarves in Rivendell and Grinnah determines they must be in league with the Elves. Thorin steps forward and the Goblin-king recognises him. He tells Thorin that Azog has a price on his head. Thorin still refuses to believe that Azog is alive. The King sends his scribe with the message that he has Azog's prize.[1][4]
- Riddle game in Gollum's cave - Bilbo discovers he is in the cave of the creature Gollum and picks up the One Ring which had been dropped by the creature. Gollum discovers Bilbo after beating a Goblin to death and Bilbo challenges him to a contest of riddles. The deal is struck so that if Bilbo wins then Gollum will show him the way out and if the alternative happens Gollum gets to eat Bilbo. While trying to think of a good riddle, Bilbo feels the Ring in his pocket and mumbles "What have I got in my pocket". Gollum thinks it is his riddle and complains about it being unfair. Bilbo gives him three guesses which he gets wrong. Gollum realises after discovering that the ring was missing, that Bilbo must have it in his pocket.[1]
- Battle of Goblin-town - Upon realising that Thorin had the "Goblin-cleaver" (Orcrist), the Goblins are ordered to kill all the Dwarves but they are interrupted by the arrival of Gandalf who tells the Dwarves to take up arms and fight. They rush through the tunnels and bridges, killing all of the Goblins in their path. Gandalf manages to kill the Goblin-king and they are forced to flee for the safety of sunlight as massive hordes of Goblins swarm in from all directions to avenge their fallen king.[1]
- Bilbo accidentally puts on the One Ring and realises it makes him invisible when Gollum can no longer see him. Bilbo has an opportunity to kill Gollum but has pity on him. He runs to rejoin the company who had just run past him in the cave.[1]
- The company regroups outside in the Pine Forest on the other side of the Misty Mountains to where they started. Thorin believes Bilbo had abandoned them but Bilbo walks up to them with the ring on and takes it off before stepping up and revealing he was still there. He told them he had a home and he would help the Dwarves reclaim theirs if he could.[1]
- Battle in the pine forest - Azog the Defiler, having arrived after receiving word from the Goblin-king, has his Wargs attack the Company. The Company climbs the pine trees which begin to fall one-by-one before they are all in one tree at the edge of a cliff. Gandalf gives the Dwarves and Bilbo pine-cones, lit on fire by his magic, to throw at the Wargs below. The Tree eventually falls to a horizontal position over the cliff and many of the Dwarves struggle to hold on. Thorin gets up and confronts Azog. He is easily taken down by the Pale Orc and his white Warg. Azog orders one of his minions to bring him the Dwarf's head and Thorin helplessly tries to reach his sword unsuccessfully. Bilbo comes to Thorin's rescue and takes down the Orc about to behead the Dwarf Prince. Fíli and Kíli run over and engage the Orcs as the Great Eagles arrive and attack the Wargs. The Eagles bear the Company away from danger.[1]
28th
- The Eagles drop off the Company at the top of the Carrock above the river Anduin. Thorin thanks Bilbo for saving his life and tells him he was wrong about saying the Hobbit didn't have a place amongst them.[1]
- Azog and his hunters move across the mountainside towards the Carrock to catch up to them.[2]
- Chase to Beorn's house - The Company makes their way towards Mirkwood. Bilbo is sent up the side of a hill to see how far away the Orcs were and he saw Beorn in bear-form, growling nearby. Bilbo rejoined the others and warned them of the new threat. Gandalf told them there was a house they might seek refuge although the host would either help them or kill them. With no choice left, they ran towards the house. Beorn almost caught them as they entered the house and Gandalf revealed that Beorn was indeed their host.[2]
- Beorn patrols the area outside the house and Azog arrives with his hunters. Azog and Narzug look on from afar and Narzug suggests they kill the Dwarves while they sleep but Azog refuses to attack while Beorn is nearby. Bolg arrives on his warg and tells Azog that the Necromancer had summoned him to Dol Guldur.[2]
- Bilbo pulls out the One Ring he had taken from Gollum in the Misty Mountains and looks at it. Beorn transforms back into man-form in the late hours of the night.[2]
- Azog, Bolg and the Hunter Orcs arrive in Dol Guldur and Azog meets with the Necromancer. The Necromancer tells Azog that the army was growing in number and strength and he needed the Pale Orc to lead his armies. Azog asked him what would become of the hunt for Thorin as the Necromancer had promised him the Dwarf's head. Sauron told him that all would die in the war. Azog decided to have Bolg take over the hunt.[2]
29th
- In the morning, Beorn is standing outside, cutting wood with his axe. Gandalf decides to introduce the Company a couple at a time due to Beorn's dislike of Dwarves. He exits the house with Bilbo and then signals the Dwarves to join him two at a time as he continues his story of how they got there.[5]
- Beorn offers the Company a meal and talks to them about their quest. He tells them that there is no way they would make it to the edge of Mirkwood before the Orcs caught up to them. He tells them that he doesn't like Dwarves but he hates Orcs more, offering to help them.[2]
- The Company borrow ponies and a horse for Gandalf from Beorn who requests that they are let go at the edge of Mirkwood. Gandalf talks with Beorn as the Dwarves prepare for the next leg of their journey. Gandalf asks why Azog had only just now crawled out of his hole and the skin-changer explains how there was an alliance between the Orcs in Moria and the Necromancer. Beorn says that the Necromancer is not what he seems and that the dead had been seen walking near the High Fells. Gandalf assures Beorn that the head of his order, Saruman, said that the enemy could never return to which Beorn asks what Gandalf himself thinks. Gandalf grows concerned and the company leave for the edge of Mirkwood.[5]
- Upon reaching the edge of Mirkwood and the entrance to the Elven path, Gandalf notices Beorn tracking them in bear-form, ensuring that the ponies were returned. He orders the Dwarves and Bilbo to release their ponies and ventures a little ways down the track. Galadriel talks telepathically again to Gandalf, warning him of the Necromancer and that he is not what he seems. She tells him to go to the High Fells and investigate the tombs of the Nazgûl. Gandalf exits the forest where Nori is about to release his horse. He tells th em not to release the horse as he is going to need it. He tells the Company he wouldn't leave unless he absolutely had to. He looks at Bilbo and tells him he has changed and Bilbo almost shows him the One Ring but stops himself, instead telling the wizard it was because he had found his courage in the Goblin tunnels. Gandalf tells Bilbo that it was good because he was going to need courage. He warns the company of the dark magic on the forest and never to lose the path. He also tells Thorin not to enter the mountain without him under any circumstance.[2]
- Gandalf heads towards the High Fells of Rhudaur and contacts Radagast to join him there.[2]
Unknown dates - Possibly take place over weeks or months.
- The company reaches a broken bridge across an enchanted river in Mirkwood. Thorin identifies that the water is enchanted and sends Bilbo across the vines to test their strength. The Dwarves follow across and Bombur accidentally falls into the water and is carried for a while by the other Dwarves.[5]
- Bilbo hears the Great Spiders in the distance and notices the webs but Thorin dismisses the sound as just the wind. The Dwarves spend a fair amount of time wandering through the forest. They begin to grow dreary and hallucinate, drifting off the path for an unknown amount of time.[2]
- The Dwarves begin to walk around in circles, looking for the path.[2]
- Eventually Bilbo climbs up to the treetops to find the right direction to head. He enjoys the fresh air and sees the Lonely Mountain and the Long Lake, realising which way they have to go. The Company is then attacked by the Great Spiders who web them up.[2]
- Skirmish in Mirkwood - After an unknown amount of time, Bilbo awakes while in the captivity of the Spiders and manages to get his hands on his sword. He stabs the spider above him and escapes, putting on the ring. He attacks some of the spiders who complain about his sword stinging, Bilbo realising that Sting was a good name for the sword. He cuts the Dwarves free and they land on the ground below, waking up and taking up their weapons to fight. Bilbo gets knocked into another section of the forest and loses the ring briefly. He attacks a baby spider who is nearby the ring, clearly being influenced by the ring's power. The Dwarves run through the forest, fighting the spiders off before Legolas, Tauriel and the Mirkwood Elf Rangers arrive and kill off the remaining spiders, surrounding the Dwarves. They search the Dwarves and Legolas discovers Glóin's portraits of his wife and son Gimli. Legolas asks about the picture of Gimli and whether it was a Goblin mutant. Legolas is also given Orcrist, then believing that Thorin had stolen it. The Elves bring the Dwarves into the Woodland Realm and Bilbo uses the One Ring to sneak in after them.[2]
- The Dwarves are locked in cells in the palace within the Woodland Realm while Thorin is taken straight to King Thranduil. Tauriel locks Kíli in his cell and the Dwarf jokingly asks if she is going to search him because he could have anything down his trousers. Clearly amused, Tauriel shuts him down by saying "or nothing". Legolas asks why Kíli stares at Tauriel to which she says he is quite tall for a Dwarf.[2]
- Thorin meets with Thranduil who offers to set them free if Thorin agrees to return the White Gems of Lasgalen. Thorin refuses the deal and is locked up with the other Dwarves. Balin is disappointed as he believes the deal was their last hope to which Thorin responds by saying that it wasn't their final hope.[2]
- Bilbo walks through the shadows of the palace with the ring on and is scared when Thranduil seemingly talks to him but is relieved when Tauriel walks out of the shadows behind him. Thranduil tells Tauriel that Legolas told him she had fought well. They discussed Legolas' feelings for her and how he would never allow him to pledge himself to a lowly Silvan Elf. He tells her not to give him hope where there is none.[2]
- Bolg and his Orc Hunters finally track the Dwarves to Mirkwood and when Narzug claims that all the entrances are guarded to which Bolg tells him that not all of them were and to follow him.[2]
- Feast of Starlight - The Elves of Mirkwood have a feast to celebrate the light of the Eldar while the guards remain in the dungeons to watch the Dwarves. Tauriel sees Kíli tossing a runestone and asks him what it is. They begin to talk and find out more about each other as Legolas watches from above.[2]
- Bilbo makes his way into the cellar where he witnesses Elros the Chief of Guards talking to Galion and deciding to drink some wine. Elros puts the keys up on a hook, thinking the Dwarves couldn't possibly go anywhere because they were locked up. Bilbo waits for them to fall asleep and takes the keys.[2]
- Bolg and the Orcs make their way around to the barrel gate, planning to infiltrate the Woodland Realm from that direction.[2]
Unknown date
- Meeting at the High Fells - Gandalf reaches the High Fells and enters them, meeting Radagast there, the pair realising that the tombs are indeed empty.[2]
- Escape from Thranduil's halls - Bilbo frees the Dwarves and leads them into the cellar where he tells them to enter the barrel. The guards realise they are gone and begin searching for them. Bilbo lets the barrels into the river below and then exits through the trapdoor himself. Tauriel walked in just as Bilbo exits and sees the trapdoor closing. The Dwarves and Bilbo make their way down-river before Legolas alerts the sentries at the barrel gate. The gate closes just as the Dwarves reach it and Thorin yells in frustration. Just as the Elves are about to recapture the Dwarves, the Orcs attack and kill the Elves guarding the gate. Kíli sees his opportunity and gets out of his barrel, going for the lever to open the gate. While he engages an Orc, Fíli throws a knife to kill one behind his brother. Kíli is about to reach the lever when Bolg pulls out his Morgul-bow and shoots the young Dwarf with a poisonous arrow. Kíli falls over and the Orcs close in. Legolas, Tauriel and the rest of the Silvan Guard arrive and engage the Orcs, giving Kíli the opportunity to stand up and pull the lever with great difficulty. The gate opens and the Dwarves flow through, Kíli jumping back into his barrel with the help of Fíli, the arrow getting knocked out of his leg as he lands in it. The Elves massacre the Orcs on the gate oupost before following the Dwarves and Orcs down-river. The Dwarves manage to take out many of the Orcs by picking up weapons along the way. Bombur is thrown out of the water and uses two axes from inside his broken barrel to spin around, taking out many of the Orcs, before running and jumping back into a spare barrel. Legolas is able to keep up with the Dwarves during the skirmish and even runs across the river multiple times, using their heads as stepping stones. As they reach the border of the Woodland Realm, Legolas doesn't notice an Orc raising his weapon behind him and Thorin throws an axe to kill that Orc, saving the Elf. Legolas looks on in dismay as the Dwarves and Orcs continue beyond their borders, forced to stop due to his father's orders. Tauriel saves Legolas from Narzug and is about to kill the Orc but Legolas tells her to keep him alive for questioning.[2]
- Gandalf realises that the Dwarves were going to be in deep trouble if the enemy has indeed returned and tells Radagast he is going to rejoin them but Radagast convinces him to take the fight to the Necromancer and they depart for Dol Guldur.[2]
- The Dwarves flow ahead of the Orc pack who are on foot but eventually lose the current. Thorin makes the call to head to land and they get out of the barrels. Thorin gives them two minutes to bind Kíli's leg and during this time they are approached by a shadowy figure. The bargeman from Lake-town named Bard, takes a few warning shots at the Dwarves but Balin manages to convince him that they are just simple merchants traveling to see their kin in the Blue Mountains. Balin strikes a deal with the bargeman to smuggle them into Lake-town on his barge.[2]
- Thranduil and Legolas interrogate Narzug back in the palace and the Orc mocks them before revealing that there was an evil plan in place for the enemy to take over Middle-earth. Thranduil, having originally promised to set the Orc free, has heard enough and beheads him. Thranduil orders the gates to be closed and nobody to come in an out, hoping to wait out the conflict at hand. The Elf at the gate tells Legolas that Tauriel has left by herself and he knows that means she had gone to hunt Orcs beyond the borders and goes out after her.[2]
- Bolg, Fimbul and the Hunter Orcs reach the location near the river-mouth where the Dwarves had boarded Bard's boat and realise that they had found a way to cross the Lake. They begin to take the long way around to the city.[2]
- Infiltration of Lake-town - Bard takes the Company through the lake and the Dwarves are trying to find enough money amongst them to pay the man the promised price. A few coins short, they all look at Glóin who denies having any extra money. The Dwarves notice the Lonely Mountain and gaze upon it in wonder, Glóin offering up all the coins he has. Bard tells the Dwarves to get back into the barrels and then makes a deal with a fisherman to fill the barrels with fish. They reach the gate and Percy almost lets them through without a hassle but is stopped by Alfrid Lickspittle, the Master's aide. Alfrid tells Bard the fish were illegal and orders the barrels to be dumped over the side but Bard manages to guilt trip the man into changing his mind when he asks what the people would do if they heard the Master was dumping fish back into the lake. Alfrid lets him through but offers a threatening warning that they know where he lives to which Bard tells him that it is a small town and everyone knew where everyone lives.[2]
Unknown date
- Alfrid talks to the Master about a possible revolution against him and how the people were talking of an election. The Master deduces that Bard must be behind all the rumors.[2][5]
- Bard takes the barge into the marketplace and lets the Dwarves out of the barrels. His son Bain arrives and tells him that their house is being watched. Bard lets the Dwarves into his house through the toilet which emptied straight into the lake. He brings them the weapons they were promised which they don't like and Bard tells them no better would be found outside the city armory. When he overhears Thorin's name, Bard remembers a tapestry with a prophecy with Thorin's name on it. He tells Bain not to let the Dwarves leave and sneaks down to the market to find the tapestry.[2]
- Legolas finds Tauriel at the borders of Mirkwood and points his bow at her. She senses him and turns around with her bow aimed at him. After Tauriel tells him she thought he was an Orc, he tells her that if he was an Orc she would be dead. He encourages her to return to Mirkwood but she makes it known that she knew he would come and they decide to hunt the Orcs together.[2]
- Infiltration of the Lake-town Armory - As night fell, the Dwarves left Bard's house, against the wishes of Bain and headed for the City Armoury. Thorin, realising they are low on time, offers the people of Lake-town a share in the treasure if they should succeed. When Alfrid asks why they should trust Thorin, Bilbo vouches for him, saying that Thorin would keep his word. Bard tries to convince the people that the quest will only bring dragon-fire and ruin on the people but they ultimately decide to support Thorin. The Dwarves are given new clothes, weapons and a place to stay before they leave the following morning.[2]
- Bofur drinks too much wine during the festivities and falls asleep in the food hall.[2]
Unknown date - Durin's Day
- Durin's Day (TA 2941)[2]
- In the early morning, the Dwarves and Bilbo are seen off with a massive parade put on by the Master. The Master's band plays music as they get into a boat and prepare to depart. Kíli tries to get into a boat but Thorin stops him, telling him that his injury would only slow them down too much. Fíli refuses to go without his brother much to Thorin's disappointment, who tells his nephew that one day he would be King and then he would understand. Óin offers to stay to help treat Kíli's wound and as the boats are leaving, Bofur arrives just too late, having to stay with the other three Dwarves who didn't go.[2]
- Bofur, Óin, Fíli and Kíli try to get help for Kíli's wound from the Master and Alfrid who send them away.[5]
- They go to Bard, with nowhere left to turn and even though he has had enough of Dwarves, he recognises that they are in need and lets them into his house.[2]
- Thorin's company reach the shore and walk up past the ruins of Dale, looking on from the hillside nearby. They begin to look for the Hidden Door of Erebor.[2]
- Mission to investigate Dol Guldur - Gandalf and Radagast arrive at the edge of Dol Guldur and Gandalf tells Radagast to go warn Galadriel and not to follow him by any means. Radagast asks if it is a trap to which Gandalf mutters "it is undoubtedly a trap". Gandalf walks across the bridge with haste, preparing for whatever he might see inside. As soon as he reaches the fortress he starts trying to lift the spell of concealment the Necromancer has placed.[2]
- Bilbo is the one who finally finds the stairway to the Hidden Door, to which Thorin tells the Hobbit he has keen eyes. They all ascend the stairs and investigate the door.[2]
- Gandalf is spotted by Azog and the other Orcs who realise the wizard would find them eventually and prepared. Gandalf is attacked by Thorin's father Thráin who has been trapped by the magic in Dol Guldur for years and has gone mentally insane due to the dark magic from the Necromancer. After a short chase, Gandalf manages to pin the Dwarf down and purge the darkness from his mind. Thráin recognises Gandalf and begins to tell him how he had gotten there and what had become of his Ring of Power.[2][5]
- As the sun begins to set, Thorin and the other members of the company begin to look for the keyhole, remembering that the map says that the last light of Durin's Day will shine upon it. After the light begins to fade they begin to give up. Eventually the light disappears and the Dwarves give up hope, beginning to walk away. Bilbo realises the text means the light of the moon and calls them back. They enter the Hidden Door, which gives them access to Erebor.[2]

Balin tells him he doesn't have to do anything and Bilbo tells him he had promised he would do this and he at least must try. As Balin leaves, he mentions Smaug in passing. Bilbo turns around to speak to Balin but the Dwarf is already walking away.[2]

- Gandalf and Thráin walk through Dol Guldur, Gandalf wanting to get Thráin out of the fortress but they are confronted by Azog. Azog reveals that he is the leader of legions of Orcs and Gandalf manages to blind him and the other Orcs for a second while they run. Azog orders his minions to run after them but Gandalf topples a tower to crush his pursuers. They are finally confronted by the Necromancer who appears as a black misty entity. Thráin tells Gandalf to let Throrin know that he loves his son before the Necromancer swallows the Dwarf up into his black mist, killing him. Gandalf manages to use the power from his staff to hold back the darkness from the entity, appearing as a ball of white light surrounded by a black mist. Eventually the Necromancer reveals himself as Sauron in a blazing light and Gandalf's staff melts under the dark lord's power. Gandalf is captured and thrown into an Orc cage.[2][5]
- Search for the Arkenstone - Bilbo enters the gold and treasure horde and spends much time looking for a "large white jewel". Eventually he accidentally wakes Smaug and puts his ring on just before the Dragon can see him. Smaug asks where the intruder is and can sense the power of the ring, saying that he knew that Bilbo carried something "precious". This caused Bilbo to take off the ring so Smaug could see him. Smaug begins to ask questions and Bilbo tries to act innocent, just being someone who wishes to look upon the Dragon's magnificence. Smaug doesn't buy any of Bilbo's stories and knows that Thorin is behind sending the Hobbit in.[2]
- Hearing the Dragon outside, Balin wishes to go help Bilbo but Thorin tells the Dwarves not to and to give him more time. Balin tells Thorin he is scared that the sickness that drove Thrór mad was effecting Thorin as well to which Thorin tells him that he is not his grandfather. Balin tells Thorin that he isn't himself.[2]
- In Bard's house, Kíli's leg wound begins to flare up dangerously. Bofur goes looking for Kingsfoil. Bard, overhearing the Dragon, pulls out the remaining Black Arrow, passed down from his ancestor Girion, planning to try and kill the Dragon himself.[2]
- When Bilbo mentions that he is a "barrel rider", Smaug deduced that the Dwarves had come from Lake-town. Smaug was tempted to let Bilbo have the Arkenstone so he could watch Oakenshield go mad but decided not to and prepared to kill Bilbo. Bilbo put on the ring and ran, grabbing the Arkenstone from the ground and escaping the dragon-fire. Smaug went crazy, looking for the invisible Hobbit and everyone in Lake-town and the surroundings could hear it.[2]
- Capture of Bard - Bard and Bain try to get the Black Arrow to the Dwarvish Windlance to lay in waiting for the Dragon when he inevitably arrived. They are seen by the Lake-town Guard who wish to take Bard into custody. Bard gives the arrow to Bain and tells him to keep it safe, the two splitting up. Bard walks around a corner where Braga and the guards are waiting for him. Braga tells him that he is under arrest. Bard asks under what charge and Braga tells him whatever charge the Master saw fit. Bard punched him and ran in the opposite direction. Bard escapes the guards but is tripped by Alfrid while running down an alleyway. The Master steps out and knocks Bard out with a branch.[2]
- Gandalf sees the Army of Dol Guldur marching out, led by Azog and heading for the Lonely Mountain.[2]
- Skirmish in Lake-town - Bolg and his minions arrive in Lake-town and begin scouring the rooftops for Thorin and his Company. Kíli is beginning to yell in pain, the poison growing in his leg. The Orcs find the Dwarves and drop into the house. Sigrid and Tilda hide under the table as the Dwarves try and hold off against the Hunter Orcs. Bofur is attacked by a single Orc while getting Kingsfoil. They are saved by the arrival of Legolas and Tauriel who massacre all of the Orcs. Tauriel throws Kíli a knife to help take down one of the Orcs and he fell off the table, screaming in pain. Legolas kept going out onto the verandah where Fimbul had run out and jumped onto a boat, notifying Bolg that Thorin had made it to the mountain. Legolas threw a dead Orc off the edge and it landed on the other side of the boat, catapulting Fimbul back to Legolas. Legolas beheaded Fimbul immediately, walking back inside. Legolas told Tauriel to come with him as he walked outside but Tauriel hesitated, knowing Kíli would die. She eventually went to follow but stopped when she saw Bofur returning with the kingsfoil. She tells Bofur she is going to save Kíli.[2]
- Attack on Smaug - Bilbo runs up the staircase and is met by Thorin who asks whether he has the Arkenstone. Bilbo, worried about what the stone will do to Thorin, tells him he doesn't have it and that they need to get out of there. Thorin puts Orcrist to Bilbo's throat, threatening him for not having the Arkenstone and blocking his path out. Smaug appears at the end of the hall and all of the Dwarves rush out onto the platform in defense, Smaug breathing fire towards them as he charges. The Dwarves all leap off the platform into the gold below. They run through a doorway, Thorin's coat catching on fire as he enters, forcing him to take it off.[2]
- Tauriel heals Kíli with elven magic and the use of the kingsfoil. He looks into her eyes, believing himself to be dreaming. He asks whether he thinks Tauriel could have loved him.[2]
- The Dwarves and Bilbo try to escape through an old maintenance exit but discover that it is closed and there is no way out. Balin suggests they make for the mines and hold out for as long as they can but Thorin decides not to give up and try and slay the Dragon. They split up to make their way to the forges.[2]
- Bolg sends Warg-riders out from Lake-town to send word to Azog that Oakenshield had made it to the mountain. He could hear Legolas running through the town, massacring his Orc minions and told a few Orcs to follow him. Legolas faces Bolg with Orcrist and Bolg is able to disarm the Elf and make him bleed. Bolg calls on his Orcs to fight Legolas while he escapes, getting onto his Warg. Legolas sees Bolg leaving and borrows a white horse to follow him.[2]
- The Dwarves lead Smaug to the Gallery of the Kings where they fire up the old forges and create a large statue of gold. When the statue is revealed, the gold melts on top of Smaug, covering the Dragon. The gold isn't enough to keep him down and he bursts out of it. He then crashes through the front gate and flies towards Lake-town to show the Dwarves and Bilbo revenge.[2]

- Destruction of Lake-town - The people of Lake-town are driven into chaos as the Dragon approaches. Bard is still in captivity and yells for the Guards to let him out but the Master has them busy loading gold and treasure onto his boat to escape. Tauriel helps the Dwarves, including a fully healed Kíli, and Bard's children to start evacuating in a boat. The Dragon takes a few scout sweeps before starting to breathe fire upon the town. Smaug deliberately takes out the wind-lance on the Town Hall in one of his first runs. The Master believes their boat is carrying too much weight and pushes Alfrid off to save more of the treasure. Bard sees his opportunity as the Master passes under the gaol and hangs a rope through the window. The rope goes around the Master and pulls him against the back of his boat. As the boat moves forward, the pressure on the window breaks through, allowing Bard to escape. He takes a longbow and a quiver of arrows and makes his way onto the rooftops.[6]
- The Dwarves and Bilbo move to Ravenhill where they can see the town better.[6]
- Legolas tracks Bolg to a pack of Orcs and Wargs and notices the symbol of Gundabad.[6]
- Bard reaches the bell-tower and ascends to the top, beginning to shoot his arrows at the un-pierce-able hide of the Dragon. As their boat went past, Bard's children see Bard, relieved to know he is alive but scared for their father. Kíli believes he saw Bard hit Smaug but Tauriel assures him that normal arrows would not kill him. Bain sees the place where he had hidden the Black Arrow and grabs a nearby rope, swinging across to the pier. Tauriel tells his sisters that he had made his choice and they couldn't go back for him now. Bain takes the Black Arrow to his father who has just run out of arrows. Bard tells Bain to get out of there but Smaug knocks the top of the tower, causing it to slightly crumble, Bard's bow snapping in two. Bain falls, holding onto the edge with one hand and the Black Arrow in the other. Bard helps his son up as Smaug lands in the town, glaring up at Bard. Smaug mocks Bard for thinking he can stand against the might of his power. He asks Bard if Bain is his son and tells him that the only thing left for them to do is to die. Bard sets up a makeshift turret, shoving each end of the bow into either side of the walls of the tower and using Bain in front of him to rest the arrow on. Smaug begins to charge at Bard in fury. Bard tells Bain to look at him and to move a little to one side before focusing, noticing the scale that Girion had chipped off many years ago. Bard aims straight for that section, the Arrow's aim staying true and impaling Smaug. Smaug changed course, knocking over the tower into the water and flying up, trying to gasp at any last ounce of strength he could conjure and then dies. His body falls, landing straight on the Master's boat, killing him and all his staff.[6]
- Bilbo sees Smaug fall from Ravenhill and the Dwarves cheer, finally having the mountain to themselves. Thorin stands over by himself, succumbing to dragon-sickness.[6]
- The survivors of Lake-town gather on the shore with nothing left. The four Dwarves get ready to go to Erebor to see if the other Dwarves survived the night and Kíli says goodbye to Tauriel. Legolas appears behind Tauriel and tells her to take leave of the Dwarf. Kíli gives her his runestone as a promise and the four Dwarves begin traveling towards Erebor. Bard and Bain return to their family and Percy outs Bard as the killer of Smaug and everyone cheers.
