Shadow of War content

The Monolith games, Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War, are confirmed to be non-canonical in the Middle-earth cinematic universe and therefore take place in their own timeline adjacent to the movies. See Canon for more information.

The war for the land of Mordor took place when the dark lord Sauron returned there during the Third Age.

Prelude[]

Upon realising Sauron was indeed the Necromancer within Dol Guldur and Gandalf was captured there, Galadriel and the White Council launched an attack to free Gandalf and defeat Sauron. Saruman and Elrond fought the ringwraiths but eventually Sauron and his wraiths were banished from Dol Guldur by Lady Galadriel and they returned to Mordor. Elrond noted that they should warn Gondor of Sauron's return but Saruman told him to leave Sauron to him. Sauron found Mordor occupied by civilisations of men from Gondor and other colonies but they were not warned of his coming and were taken by surprise.

The war[]

Sauron began by breeding legions of Uruks and Orcs and attacking the various village settlements within Mordor, taking men as his slaves. His trusted Black Captains were sent with an army to conquer the Black Gate from the Gondorian rangers keeping watch there which they did, successfully blocking off Mordor from Gondor. The Spider Shelob, swore revenge on Sauron and when she realised he was back in Mordor, she led a campaign against his forces with her children. When the wraith elf lord Celebrimbor possessed Talion the ranger as he died during that battle they swore revenge on the Black Hand of Sauron for the death of Talion's family. Becoming known around Mordor by the Uruks as the gravewalker or the bright lord, Talion fought many battles within Mordor against Sauron's forces. There was also a brief resistance of slaves led by Hirgon until they were defeated by the Black Captains.
