The Wargs of Rhovanion, or Wolves of Isengard, were a sturdier breed of Warg that inhabited the region of Rhovanion. A ferocious stock eager to run down prey, they were harnessed to spread fear and havoc among Sauron's enemies.
History[]
The Wargs of Rhovanion were a hyena-bear-like breed of Warg, distinguishable by their large size, short snout, brown fur and barking. Some of them bore the signs of harder taming or previous skirmishes such as spikes protruding through their flesh as well as heavy scarring. With the increasing strength of Sauron these beasts became bolder and bolder, ravaging the lands of Rohan and lurking beneath the trees of Mirkwood.
Sharku's warband were mounted on such Wargs - kept in subterannean pens in the muddied pits of Isengard - in their devastating incursions into the realms of Rohan and Gondor. This troop was left by the wizard Saruman to weaken his enemies by raiding their territories and later to attack them on the hills as they journeyed to Helm's Deep. The wolves that survived the encounter with the fleeing Rohirrim returned back to Isengard to lick their wounds.
Ravaging Wargs of Rhovanion were also heard and glimpsed through the branches of Mirkwood by Eradan, Andriel and Farin in their search for the wizard Radagast, and one even made its appearance, howling to alert the nearby Orcs parties sent by Agandaûr before creeping back into the darkness of the forest.
